How do you "break in" a XML led?

I Read on CPF about “breaking in” or “burning” the led to achieve more brightness, how do you do that? How much power and for how long? Is it a noticeable difference between a burned in and a brand new led? What say you? I am guessing that the burn in lowers the Vf of the led, but by how much?

This seems an odd concept, do you have a link?

I think this once applied to early versions of the Luminous SST-90 and not Cree LED’s.

i saw a mention of that there the other day - sending it a huge pulse (can’t remember if it was voltage or current) for a tiny fraction of a second.

i think if it were a reliable method that didn’t decrease life, cree would do it, but on the other hand, what do i know (and we expect much shorter life than cree does anyway)

I think that is for older leds. I think, no need to do in “today” leds

They were talking about it here

Haven’t heard about led burning since the days of luxeon I leds.

Sounds like a discussion worthy of cpf ..

Reminds me of the age old question about how to break in a dirt bike ..

#1.... by the suggested manufacturers reccomendations

or

#2 ... go out and flog the **** out of it ...?

Murphys law says you'll always pick the wrong one ..So figure out which ones the smartest thing to do ...and do the opposite

The link says vinh has a page describing the process, so that may be worth looking for, but if this process does work on todays new LEDs does it reduce the life, and if so by how much, a few thousand hour loss is no big deal, a 90% life loss is not so good.

I tried finding Vinh’s thread but my Search-Fu was not strong enough (Specially after a few drinks)
