Aurora SH-034 quick look

I will work this up into a review later. The 34 is the larger of these two lights - it is a Cree XR-E R2 emitter and is driven by a CR123 cell.

Its head is identical externally to the 18650 Aurora SH-032 which makes this a pretty large and wide light for a CR123 cell. The Sh-032 and SH-034 heads are interchangeable though it looks a little odd because the SH-032 head is highly polished whereas the 34 head is more of a satin finish.

It is as bright as the Trustfire F22 on high with a 14500. The Aurora is on the left and both are sitting on top of a monitor about 1.5m (5 feet) from the ceiling. You can see the typical Cree ring around the hotspot of the Aurora. Many Cree XR-E lights suffer from this. As you can see, the Trustfire has the tighter hot spot so will probably throw better. My meters are still in the car and the dog needs walking if I'm not to be up at 4am so it'll be a while till the measurements get done.

In case anyone's wondering, the object casting a shadow is a speaker.

I like the beam profile........hows the clicky, does it seem to have good tension when pressed.

Can't tell the difference from any of the other SS lights I own. Better than the Trustfire F22. Same as SH-032. May well be the same switch. It is interchangeable with the SH-032 switch. Only difference is surface finish.

You can see the metal ring round the LED which is diagnostic of Cree XR-E emitters. Moderate orange peel finish on the reflector that cleans up the beam nicely. In the ceiling beamshot above, you can see the beam pattern and that the reflector is doing its job. The hotspot is way overexposed though. As you can see, the beam colour is faintly purple, at least when compared to the F22's LED.

Length

Width

With an Ultrafire C3 Q5 Stainless Steel

Aurora on the left, Ultrafire on the right. As you can see, it is not a lot shorter, and quite a bit fatter than a 14500 light. Will do some more pics later beside other lights. The width seems to be determined by the head which is externally identical to the SH-032 head and tail - which are interchangeable with these. It is quite hard to photograph the odd look legoing these parts causes, but the 32 is a lot shinier.

Compared from the front

Well i already told myself that i was going to get one as a back to work present to myself. Thanks for posting more pics Don, it seems to be a nice looking well made light. Does the light get hot after awhile of use.

Ran it mostly on high for about 30 minutes while walking Fizzy in the park. Not any noticeable heating. But then it still isn't that warm outside after dark

Thank you sir for the reply.....cant wait for payday now.

Glad to hear you're back to work. I think it'd make a good back to work present.

Hope payday's soon Al.

It is.....hey how do you like the 18650 light, since i can use another as well. Does it have a low voltage warning when the cell gets under a certain voltage.

Review of the 18650 light. http://budgetlightforum.cz.cc/node/190

Doesn't have a low voltage warning that I've seen. It's head and tailcap are interchangeable with the 34

Okay i remember now......might get that one later on down the road.

Hey buddy can you post the link......im drainded from work and really dont want to look at lights right now. Just want it ordered.Sealed

Enjoy!

Hey buddy just wanted you to know that i just put my order in.......

After all, you deserve a new light after finding a new job. And maybe another light or two?

I'd be doing beamshots but instead of dense fog we have heavy rain tonight. I really could use an underwater camera for beamshots - just at the moment the sea is trying to reclaim the land by air drop. Even the dog isn't prepared to spend a second more out there than she has to. But then she had a very busy day being adored. I had to go out of town to visit a couple of former customers of the hospital - both of whom were delighted to meet the monster dog - she wasn't all that interested in her tea when we got home.

Thanks for the kind words man....i can tell you now that when this light comes in im going to order the 18650 version......would be nice to have one in SS. How do you like the mode memory of the light.

All of these are good lights...

So it uses the half press method of mode changing when the light is on right.

Hello all… New member, former lurker.

Bought an Aurora SH-034 single-mode for the wife, based on good reviews such as this one. [Thanks Don!] Finally received from DX after a few weeks. Output flickers and dies sporadically. It will often come back with a shake or a tap on the body.

This was with a fresh T.I. lithium CR123. Double-checked with another… same thing. Swabbed the inside and lubed the threads lightly so I don’t think its assembly gunk internally.

The switch end gets hot, quick. I realize SS tend to get warm, but this unusual. In one small [pinky finger print sized] spot it gets scalding hot after 30 secs. Something wrong with the switch?

Anyone had similar issues? Is there an easy DIY fix? I am a newb to LED lights, but I tinker with my car and computers. I don’t really want to deal with returns, but I guess I might have to. :frowning:

Thanks in advance for your help
