Help me to love my Solarforce L2r

Before I got into 18650's I bought an L2r. Overall it's a nice light, but it just doesn't do anything for me. The form factor is bit awkward, and there's just no pizzaz. Any suggestions...maybe use it as a potatoe masher? Does anyone have an L2r and really like it? How is yours set up? I think I'm all outta love

Love is a strong word, but it is a good loaner to non-flashaholics with some runtime. I certainly like my modified for 2AAs UF-501c (thanks to old4570, father of all AA-mods) a lot better, when it comes to form factor. But I would not give my L2R away... I think. The flat bezel ring on mine did improve its look and usability for me.

Get yourself an 8 volt max drop-in, a couple of 14500 Li-on batteries (make sure they are equally charged) and your L2r will come alive and in a pinch, you can still use alkies. Like you, my L2r sat unused (and unloved) until I woke it up with this combination.

I was just gonna suggest 2 14500s with a dropin that can support the increased voltage. I’ve never looked but was thinking of a green laser p60 dropin or doing a uv p60

I have one grey L2R coming from Solarfoce sales. You're all bunch of buzzkillers, shame on you.

Well, I bought it as an alkaline-capable emergency light anyway. Don't expect it to be portable sun. I realized I have like nine 18650 lights (when all arrive), but not even one AA light. What if I decide to go trekking to eastern Azerbaijan for half a year (and who wouldn't?)? Little would I do with all those 18650 lights. No, 2AA is just what is needed. (and don't try to tell me otherwise, or I will feel bad)

HID - You will not be disappointed with your L2r.

It is still a Solarforce, so you will not be disappointed with built quality and functionality. There is sadly not much choice in the 2AA P60 host department.

And for good reason, it is an ackward sized-light to carry. I have a Romison that has a cr123 tube and also an extension tube to use it with 2xAA.

I've never put the AA tube on it, just makes it look like a long skinny light. But I keep it in case of emergency, since I have about 100 or so AA batteries that I could use if my 18650's can't be charged due to a power outage.

But slight variation of a few millimeters can make a huge difference. The mentioned modified 501c is about as ergonomic as it gets. Length to width ratio is better than 501b or SF L2 imo. The slightly smaller head and slightly thicker body have a big impact on ergonomics and aesthetics.

I was about to say the same thing. MIght be nice to see the superior L2i/L2r knurling on an L2/L2P.
