25mm M791 Ammo Boxes as Flashlight Storage

Hi all,

Just wanted to put out an idea/tip for storing your gear.

I picked up 5x plastic ammo boxes (like these) from a surplus dealer recently, and I’m going to use them for flashlight storage. They’re air and water-tight, so either silica gel or those plug-in reusable silica modules are probably a good idea. The plastic on them is extremely thick and durable, and the box opens on both ends, allowing a divider to be put in the middle of the box to create two independent “sections.” The interior dimensions are approximately 12” x 5” x 12”.

Of course, I’m being extremely careful w/ prep, soaking them in simple green and using a cheap steam cleaner to blast any and all foreign matter out of these boxes. They arrived smelling like sulfur and gunpowder. But they look very slick, and with a little bit of elbow grease the spray paint used to cover the explosive markings came right off.

At least one box will be devoted to battery storage—I’ve seen some threads recently about batteries failing in a spectacular manner, and I don’t want my hobby to hurt anyone else. The box has (at points) plastic that’s 1/4 inch thick, which should help to contain a failure, and removing the rubber seals or drilling relief holes may allow it to vent some of the pressure in a more safe manner. I bet I could make a battery storage area on one end of the box, and a charging station of sorts on the other. I dunno, just thinking out loud

I also think these could be an incredibly cool/unique way to store some of my gear beyond flashlights. While it is a little awkward to carry, it wouldn’t be too hard to replace one of the two straps w/ a shoulder strap. I could see the “bug out” guys loving these for their durability.

And, on an unrelated note…I really want to build a powerhouse gaming computer into one
