Hello from Scubaduderon in Guam.

I've been interested in LED lights since I bought a Rock River headlamp for camping a few years back. I liked that I got it and it overpowered a lamp my buddy bought for more that twice the cost.

My main interests at the moment are lights for scuba diving (I live on Guam), headlamps, throw monsters, small high lumen flashlights and perhaps tacticals.

I realize that is a tall order, but fire away, all suggestions will be considered and I will learn a bit from each of them.

My friends crash free at my place, so if you are in the area and want to go diving or snorkeling, let me know. My wife is an incredible cook too!

Thanks,

Ron

Johnny

Aloha and welcome to BLF Ron!

Welcome to BLF, Ron!! Johnny

I'm serious, if you come to Guam, you must get in touch with me. I don't know why but I love giving tours, only one of which will be done at night with only our flashlights to protect us from the Taotaomanas...

644 geocaches over there, I really want to go bbq there! :) welcome to blf

Is it just me, or do the "tao tao mama's" sound like a threat where you don't use a flashlight as protection?

nt

Ghosts? You have a whole island full of freaking ghosts?

I was wrong. You don't need a flashlight. You need a proton pack.

One great aspect of living on Guam are the Fiestas. People look for every excuse to throw big parties with incredible food, much of it bbq. They usually have lots of beer, guitars, dancing, and family.

Even political rallies are like that. Imagine the politicians wooing the voters with awesome food and drink. I mean dozens of parties all over the island for about 6 weeks prior to the election.

On Guam all you have to do to find a battlefield is look down.

The fiestas sound awesome. Also gives the impression you're not overly infested with tourists yet.

As for the battleground.. I can't really understand, I guess. I've visited a couple, but it's different than living there.

We have a large component of Japanes tourists, and a lesser component of Chinese and others. This place is absolutely gorgeous, eternal summer, awesome oceans and killer snorkeling, but it isn't a consumers paradise. There are very few stores here that carry unusual items like flashlights. The shop I work in carries probably the best LED lights, and those are very modest indeed.

Hey Ron, since you are an expert, any recommendation or tips about the diving lights on DX, etc?

I don't know what DX means! Is that distance? Oh, Deal Express, I had to search for it... The diving light kits are certainly interesting.

The current rage in the "relatively low cost diving light about $200" category is the UD C8 Eled+ which claims 180 lumen output.

It can be viewed here: http://www.uwkinetics.com/products/c8-eled

I believe there is a lot of room to play within the dive light industry. Seems like a lot of the budget lights present on BLF would be great underwater, much better that what I see available. Divers are willing to pay a premium price for them. It takes a lot to punch through water and get any meaningful information back from what you are illuminating. It's weird to be suspended in a 3d medium and only be able to see what is within your flashlights gaze. Too much of a wide beam often creates a haze of millions of small creatures swarming around you too, and to tight gives you that tunnel vision.

Not really for real diving, just playing in the pool.

Uh-oh. Well, we can't have that!

okay, time for 'the usual suspects'

DX - dealextreme

KD - kaidomain

MF - manafont

FP - focalprice

DB - discoverybargain

SF - solarforce (well, they're a brand, but this is their online store)

These are just the ones that come to mind offhand. For a complete list of dealers, look over at the 'budget dealer experiences' sub-forum

Most of the budget dealers I look at are based out of Hong Kong, and have free shipping. It can take up to a month to deliver between the slow shipping, customs, and the fact that these dealers don't actually have sizable warehouses. They act as middlemen between the real suppliers and the customers. (most use variations of the same suppliers, so you'll notice similar items showing up on most of them)
