I call it Frakenspot - serious throw

Go ahead and laugh because I know it's redneck and hokey, but it was still a fun project. I took a cheap spotlight and mated it to an 18V Dewalt battery pack. Then I replaced the bulb with a 100W Halogen bulb designed for 12V. So being overdriven at 18 volts it was crazy bright... for a while. Yes it did eventually burn out the bulb but it lasted a little while. In the two tree pictures below one is a 500 lumen incandescent light and the tree is 50 yards away in both pics. The other is Frankenspot practically lighting the tree on fire. I present to you... Frakenspot...

I love redneck tech .

YEEEHAAA !

Wow that sucker must have gotten hot!

what did that tree do to you ? just cruel , lol nice mod

I have one I used a 100W/55W headlamp bulb, with both filaments wired on... I'm only running it at 12V, but it puts out quite a bit of light nonetheless...

However, I think any future projects will be LED. XM-Ls are only going to get cheaper, and ten of them running off a big gel-cell would make a quite nice light... too bad I could never afford to build such a thing.

I think the cheapest (and most redneck) way to get that same effect would be with a bit of gasoline and a match :)

How came I can't see the photos? Is it just because I'm on a Mac?

Here is a shot of Frankenspot lighting up a tree about a 1/4 mile away. And notice that most of the tree is lit up, not just a little spot.

Nice. Next step would be HID, what bulb is it using? H4 i suppose?

Where's the pic of the tree on fire? =P

Getemer, it's not your Mac.

I'm still running an OLD G4 Mac, (circa 2000). She's old and slow but still faster than my DSL connection.

I see the pictures just fine.

later,

I love it! just make sure the battery pack can withstand that kind of draw!

Thanks parkerdude! I actually got it fixed. My web filtering was blocking photobucket which was then keeping the pictures from loading.

Whooee, that looks fun! Now for an array of about 15 XM-Ls... ;)
