Windows 7 Hacked by Microsoft ?

Ok this is really disturbing …
I have a list of updates to avoid , one is the Win10 notification KB 3035583

My windows update is turned off , I havent downloaded KB3035583 …
But some how , its on my computer

So is Microsoft Hacking users computers to install KB3035583 ?
This is a serious breach if true , is MS committing a crime by doing this ? ( and just how the FK did KB3035583 get on my computer with the update turned off ? )

Hahaha your one of many encountering this.
They just renamed the KB SK it was pushed again.
And they changed updatesl process a little to make this happen to you.
If you switch to Ubuntu (easy to operate Linux) these problems are gone though others may arise.

or… i’m on an xp computer… lol…

Yes, on one of my Win7 computers, that Win10 update was downloaded (ready to install) even though I never selected it, and I had auto-download turned off. It’s a huge update (obviously), so it’s rather annoying to use that much data when I specifically didn’t want to at that time.

I eventually upgraded all my computers to Win10. BTW, it’s a good release, I recommend getting it while you still have time to do it free. A fresh install might be better (you can download a DVD or USB image for this), but the upgrade works well too, and you don’t have to reinstall anything.

Unfortunately, Win10 doesn’t allow you to postpone updates at all, so you’re forced to download and install them whenever Microsoft decides to do it. (Usually a couple of times per day.) You can turn off some stuff (like Apps), but you can’t for the security updates.

There are a couple things you can do to prevent the Win10 ‘push’.
GRC | Never10   - Gibson is a VERY respected programmer. You can trust his stuff.
GWX Control Panel - Another easy to use tool.

These 2 tools make it easy, but you can find other instructions for manually blocking it. MS is becoming very aggressive about pushing this on users. Unless you blocked it a long time ago you probably already have the downloaded upgrade files on your hard drive with a name something like [$Windows.~WS]. You have to configure [windows explorer] to see them [Tools>Folder Options>View>Show hidden files, folders, or drives].

If you are not aware Win10 has LOTS of ‘phone home’ capabilities and by default they are all turned on. There are lots of sites that show how to turn them off, or at least the most obnoxious ones.

I’ve been using it since beta, and it is on my test PC, including one drive as a pre-release. It generally is pretty good but IMO it’s still in ‘beta’. If you think you are going to upgrade I’d wait until May-June. [ upgrade will remain free for qualifying users until 07/28/2016.]

It’s not free, in fact it’s far from free, you just no longer pay with money.

I followed the recommendations and ixnayed the 10 installs, deleted all that useless pre stuff for the space, but somehow it’s back and that stupid little white window pane is in my toolbar again. I just ignore it and carry on now. Had to clone my drive and put in a new hard drive as my original was failing, now I get a warning all the time that I don’t have an official copy of Win 7 Pro and they want me to buy it, again, for $150. They pester me with pop-up’s all day along about this. It’s yet another way they make a genuine nuisance of themselves.

??? I guess that is an anti-MS statement, but they’re really no worse (or better) than any of the other major O/S providers (Apple, Google, and various smaller companies that write apps). They all spy on you to sell more ads.

Anyway, Win10 upgrade is free until July 29th this year. Okay, you have to provide your own bandwidth to download it, which may not be free if you don’t have an unlimited or high data limit. But it’s basically free.

It’s a huge improvement over Windows 8/8.1. Very similar to Windows 7, but faster and with more stuff. I like it. I also liked WinXP and Win7, but hated Win8 and versions earlier than XP. I still use XP on an old machine once in awhile, where I have no personal info or connectivity to my other machines, so I don’t worry about viruses.

If you have a legit copy with a product key, just activate it. If it doesn’t work on line you can call.
If you don’t have the key……. :frowning:

I had a “one and done” experience using this tool to stop the win10 surge… highly recommended.

I had that once when I upgraded a desktop. If you change too much hardware, they invalidate your key. However, I just called them up and talked to the service guy, and he quickly gave me a new key. I think they make people call them, just to prevent an easy Internet pirate key going out to thousands of people from overseas.

With Windows 10, it doesn’t appear they use keys at all anymore. I guess Big Brother is storing your computer MAC address or something, and when I reinstalled (from DVD) after making some hardware changes, it never prompted me for anything at all. I guess that’s good, though I’m not sure what would happen if you installed onto a computer with no network access.

if you just want a basic computer? maybe think about downloading tiny7, or one of the “pro” 7’s on the internet…

theres also an app or two that stops the “certificating problem” when you do that…

i’ve used tinyxp and tiny7 on 32 and 64 bit older computers respectively? when re-doing peoples older computers, always to good effect.

less memory in these stripped down versions, less overhead, more stability and speed. any missing components you might need, you can still get them, VIA the “anti certification app”, lol

hey… my client paid for WIN 7 on their laptop, they HAVE a license they PAID FOR… when it craps out?? its legal to put “tiny7” on it.

the fact it takes up less space and memory, and runs faster and smoother? is just icing on the cake. Amazing that they work better than the “professionals” can do it at MicroSquish.

Big Brother’s sleeping minions awake.

Suddenly you have a housemate who will be with you always, watching you.

The promise of the Internet was we could find everything we wanted.
Look through everything and ask anybody, and find what we want, and ignore what we don’t want to bother with.

If Google had put as much effort into searching product catalogs and first hand user comments about, well, everything, and helping us search then for real information and real people’s experienced opinions (sigh) search would work for us.

Instead the experience is backwards — they watch us, and push stuff on us, and fool us.

Don’t like.

I’m not all that computer saavy. Something goes wrong it’s a nightmare for me to fix it. I have Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 5 and I don’t want to be on the Cloud, I don’t want to have to relearn the computer either, I like mine just like it is, we work together, changing to “10” would be frustrating and tax my bad memory, why would I want to do that?

Well, it’s like having a really good butler. To do their job well they have to know a LOT about you. Of course they expect to be paid. If you don’t pay them, they will find other means to supplement their livelihood. What would YOU do in similar circumstances?

In the case of this kind of software (Win 8/10, Google, Yahoo, Apple, ALL the smart phones) they get a lot of it from targeted advertising. For Win10 I thinks the majority of it is advertising of some sort.

But I didn’t buy a $1700 computer to render continued aid to Microsoft, I needed it to work for ME! FOREVER! :stuck_out_tongue: The $1700 personal slave, if you will. lol And of course, I’ve spent a LOT adding to it so it can do the job better.

Why would I want a touch-screen system on a non-touch-screen PC? For that matter, I don’t even have a smart phone, so why would I want a Smart Phone style computer system? And my XP HAS to still work, it’s how I gain Firewire access to my Canon 1DsMkII…

You can always run a Linux OS, like Ubuntu. It’s come a long way over the years, and now has a pretty good interface. There is a bit of a learning curve, especially if you want to get into the guts or customize it.

I’ve used Ubuntu a bit (I put it on a USB stick as an emergency backup system). I don’t know too much about it, but it’s fine for browsing the web, doing photo stuff, etc. Came in handy once to do file recovery on a laptop that died. Probably more secure than Microsoft or Apple, as it’s less of a target for hackers.

But I’m too used to Windows, and I’ve got too many applications that run on Windows, to give it up. My favorite OS is probably Windows 7, but Windows 10 is very close and seems faster and more stable. But yeah, it does phone home a lot.

Srsly, don’t advertise if you’re identifiable. Some kids are looking for soft targets to practice on.

Ok so you are rich, you run a company that do this or that, and your largest competitor has surreptitiously hired your butler to figure out how to undermine your business.

Microsoft isn’t hurting for money.

You’d be much better off if you were given the option to pay for win10, or that “free” calculator app on your smartphone.

But its at this point comfychair will come running in and shout “conspiracy theory sovereign citizen” and then about three comments later someone will point out “political discussions are against the rules of BLF” … sadly, you cannot point out to someone that they are being fleeced without being accused of breaking the rules and being a tin-foil-hat-wearing-nutjob.

So, the tools in the 5th post will work fine.

My XP doesn’t go online, I keep it strictly for accessing my camera.
