Hi, my name is Benson, and I'm a flashaholic

  • My first "real" flashlight was a Mag I modded with WF-500 drop-in parts and an SSC P7, powered by NiMH D-cells (back when that was the hot new LED); from there I've bought and built any number of 18650 lights and Mag-mods on Li-ion (25500-26700 in both C and D bodies), from XR-Es to a 200W-class paper-burning hotwire. I have a fondness for small (10180/10440/14500) lights with big capabilities, but I've learned to restrain myself because of the incredible capacity/volume gap between 18650s and any smaller cell.
  • I've degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering, for whatever they're worth, but I earn my living as a machinist in our family shop. (And as a machinist with access to fancy CNC machines, I have all the more respect for the feats achieved without such luxuries (e.g. the "human lathe" technique).
  • I was active on CPF (username: Benson) some years ago, but got to a point where I was wasting too much time (chattering on the forum) and money (buying flashlights and parts) on this hobby. Walked away for a couple years, about the time BLF was taking off. When I started heeding that old itch again, the BLF community was clearly more aligned with my interests than what's left at CPF, so I've been reading and searching BLF for maybe a year, while silently buying and modding lights. Now I'm finally registering an account here so I can post some measurements to Ouchyfoot's thread on a potential 14500/20mm triple host, but now that I have an account, I'm likely to post about some future mods as I do them.

Hello Benson! Welcome back to the hobby! I’m sure you’ll have a great time here!

Thanks for joining the party, BensonM!

Good to have you here in BLF!

Welcome Benson, any 12 step program here is likely to just bring you in deeper.

Welcome aboard Benson. I should probably advise you to turn and run, but since you’re already admitting to be a flashaholic I reckon it’s too late.

I’m the guy that talks too much.

And my collection has surpassed 150 now, I think, with a few on the way (pretty sure it’s only 3 at the moment but my memory is atrocious so who knows?)

Have a great weekend!

Oh, by the way, Rufusbduck is probably the absolute best at the human lathe thing, able to do wonders with such lights as the tiny AAA MagLite. And many others… Just so’s ya know…

I’d say kyfishguy has done way more of them and experience counts for a lot. I use a different method that allows for a bit more creativity though.

Welcome to active users!
Always nice to see those cool mods ppl pull off here!

Welcome back Benson!
Obviously you are not trying to cure the addiction!

Thanks guys!

Yeah, this is an "addiction" I don't aim to cure.

Welcome.
