Sad Day in OZ?

I see that Holden cars are no longer, as of Oct 20, 2017, being manufactured in Australia. Just re-badging imported cars now. I imagine there are Holden fanatics who will miss them just as there are Studebaker and Nash fans still in the USA and Canada.

Yes Don it certainly was a sad day. We have had a few of them, sad days that is, lately as one car manufacturer after another closed down here. Holden (GM) was the last.
We have had some amazing local cars produced over the years which led to a strong Holden VS Ford debate among the public. With our local car racing you were generally either a Holden or a Ford Fan.
One of the cars I admired the most was the Holden Torana XU1. A little giant killer at the time.

It’s disappointing to loose such a big home-grown product.

Having been in the industry my whole working life, I’ve seen “Badge Engineering” & out-sourcing becoming more & more prominent, & Holden are now up to their necks in it, with terrible cars like the Cruze, Captiva, & Astra.

The average consumer, however, continue to lap them up, because it has a Holden badge on it :person_facepalming:

Holden had what was probably the most beautiful concept car ever, a few years back

Wow!
I’ve never seen that before now but it’s gorgeous. I’m sad it never saw production and I mourn your loss. It’s truly sad to see such things happen.

My father worked for Chrysler from 1964 until 2001. Sadly he didn’t even enjoy 2 years of his retirement.

I mourn both the loss of my father and the company he proudly worked for and supported for so many years. They have changed hands many times now and soon will again if rumors are true.

Cheers.

I commented on this here somewhere a few months ago. GM plans to produce vehicles in China for sale under the Holden brand name. Sad indeed. I would have liked to see the planned pickup-like vehicle based on the Pontiac G8 (American Ute or updated El Camino) produced but they killed Pontiac along with Oldsmobile, Saturn, and Hummer. They also pretty much destroyed Saab and Opel. GM also sold Vauxhall to Fiat and having seen what they’ve done to Chrysler no good will come of it. GM seems willing to throw global operations away to focus more on the auto market in China and increase production there for global export. If the Buick Envision is an example of what to expect from a china-focused GM I say the next time they run the company to bankruptcy let it collapse.

RIP first world manufacturing trying to compete against countries with no OHS :frowning:

Here in France if you want a small, french-made (ie. assembled in France) car, you can choose a Toyota Yaris

French car makers still produce some models here, but also produce a lot in Eastern-Europe countries, Turkey, etc…
