Hi guys, I have this lamp which I’d like to mod. I initially bought it thinking it’d be useful to have a lamp that did red or white, however it isn’t very bright, doesn’t throw well, has a black spot in the centre and cycles through 4 colours without being able to choose which colour first or to stay on a colour.
Instead I’d like to upgrade the led to a more powerful one that will throw better. Would this be do-able for a newbie?
Unno. Got no idea what kind of lamp it might be.
Sounds pretty proprietary, though, so probably won’t have any off-the-rack parts to substitute easily.
Is the body metal or plastic?
The emitter seems to be sitting right on top of the driver without having a good thermal path to the body (or at least it looks like it).
To get any serious output from a light, a good thermal path is a mandatory requirement.
Yeah, looks like one of those reflectors you can get at FT which has the 6 holes so you can directly mount a 20mm star. That might be a decent-enough heat-sink for an LED that ain’t pushed very hard, for very long, but it looks like the driver is just hotglued onto the back end of it.
I guess it could be modded but that really depends on your ability. It looks like one of these only with a colour xml. The colour xml has 4 dies so that will explain the slightly out of focus beam. A dedomed xml-2/ xpl hi / xpg2 will give you a more satisfying beam but you will need to change the driver as well. As noted above there is no heatsinking to speak of, so the led cannot be driven hard. The best thing about this light is the reflector and because the body is plastic it is light weight but other than that this light has really poor quality. If you are up for the challenge then try it but if the end goal is more important than the road travelled then don’t bother modding it.
Ahh ok thanks guys, I’ll measure the reflector tomorrow, I can’t remember of it was metal or plastic but I’m guessing if I could find a metal reflector like the one lightbringer posted I could possibly do something with it.
