SOLD The kyfishguy experimental maglite (price reduced $75)

Once upon a time when the world was new, a muggle researching flashlights found this very forum. One member stood out to me due to his pioneering ways in modding and skill with a hand file. I wondered if I could ever do any of the things Old Lumens did. Since I had my doubts, the thing to do was to dedicate a flashlight that didn’t have any real value for experimentation.

When I saw Justin cut down a maglite to 1D size I took a dustbin special wide body 4D mag and gave it a shot. The seam was ugly so I tried filing rings around the tube like Justin did. Then I gave up with the decorative filing. Justin made heatsinks out of copper pipe and solder, so I tried it out and it worked, and was a lot of work.

He made triples with interesting reflector choices so I used some Convoy S3 reflectors in the same way. Justin loved his Nichia 219a emitters so I tried some out, didn’t like em so much but they grew on me. Eventually upgraded to 219C cause I like lumens.

He liked stripping and polishing maglite parts so I did the bezel, may have left it in the Drano a little too long though. Justin bored a maglite for two 18650 side by side so my experimental mag got dual bored as well.

Lastly, Old Lumens had a thing for electronic switches and Dr. Jones ramping drivers. I did it my way with Ferro-Rocher firmware and recently upgraded to D4 ramping. I don’t know of he ever used a maglite as a hammer but someone did with this poor beastie.

Well, Old Lumens has retired but his memory will live on in this forum and in the modding techniques he selflessly taught all who would listen and try. I’m done modding this light, it came out pretty good and like all my mods it has to find a new home. Its pretty bright, draws 12 amps on laptop pulls (6A per cell), over 13 with a liitokala 26650, and in excess of 16 with a pair of VCT5s.

Price includeing CONUS shipping is $75. International buyers pay additional shipping.

Nice one  This stirs memories. I miss reading about OL’s modding adventures.

How much did you have to bore out the tube to take the 18650’s side by side please?

 All the best for the sale.

And this is why I wake up old threads. Received the light today. And it’s a solid build. You are a maglite master.

Got me out of retirement for a short while anyway! Glad you like the light and thanks for the kind words as always.

Damn... I miss that man...
