New Emisar D4 has weird beam pattern

So I got a D4 w/ XPL-HI emitters last week and didn’t really get to use it until this weekend. I noticed the beam pattern is sort of ‘spikey’ instead of having the smooth circular transition like my other D4 with nichia emitters. When I look at the emitters themselves, they’re not at all symmetrical and the optic looks like it was cut to make it fit.

Is this normal? Should I send it back? I got it from Richard at Mtn Electronics so it’s not like I bought it from anywhere sketchy.

edit - couldn’t get a decent beam shot because my phone is crap.

Everything looks OK to me.

No beam shot pics?

I agree with netprince. Everything looks right. The emitters are intentionally at odd angles to prevent weird beam patterns. And from the pics you posted, I don’t see where the optic looks like it was cut. Can you explain why you think it looks cut to you?

The two legs were cut off because that space is used for the screws to fix the led board. The emitters were placed asymmetrically to reduce the spikiness you’re observing. It’s normal. :+1:

Ok, that’s cool. As long as that’s intended.

The led is a square. So a single led created a four sided/spiked artifact. So by rotating the other three emitters differently you create a mild 16 sided artifact instead of a strong four sided artifact. If it bugs you there is also a floody optic you can install for a smoother beam. you do sacrifice a bit of throw though.

I thought that might be the case but wasn’t really sure. Thanks.

Cheers man. It’s an awesome light.
