Convoy S2+ running at 2x speed

So I just received my final Convoy light. I ordered the S2+ in orange with the 7A XPL HI LED and 4x drivers to be my pocket carry. I like the warmer tints and went with 4x drivers for efficiency since I will primarily be using lower modes anyways. I will keep my 8x driver and my D1 in my EDC bag anyways.

To the point of this post, the new light seems to be running at double speed. The strobe is very fast and single speed, and the bike mode/batt check/config mode are comically fast.

I messaged Simon, and he said “The blinking frequency is different because of different batch of the driver.”. I guess my question is this: is my best path forward to open up the light and flash an updated version of biscotti? I should have all of the tools, but I have never actually flashed a flashlight with new firmware. I am thinking this approach may work since I read it had something to do with fuses being set incorrectly.

Thanks!

I think you may want to have a conversation with Toykeeper if she has the time.

There’s something special about having a light that you’ve modded yourself. Also modding is a fun hobby.

If you’ve got the tools and are willing to learn how to do it, flashing a driver could be fun.

I opened up one of my other S2+ lights today to swap to an OP reflector and found that the driver is soldered to the brass pill. Wouldn’t the heat-sinking of the pill make it almost impossible to get the driver out again?

Pull out the pill, put it in a vice with wooden chucks then heat it up hot enough for the solder to melt. You’ll need a decently powerful soldering iron or a hot air rework station.

The S2+ with 6&8x7135 have drivers soldered to the pill. The 4x shouldn’t be.

I’ve not really had any trouble pulling out the soldered drivers. I use side cutters to remove most of the solder to make it a little easier, then I just use my 70W iron, or a craft heat gun to preheat the pill before going at the solder with the iron and a solder sucker.

This is an old and well-known problem, I am disappointed to hear Simon is still shipping too-fast versions in 2018

My first Convoy S2+ was a Desert Sand with XPL-Hi U6-3A, 7135x6, Biscotti.

Its timing is also very fast.

I believe in an earlier post, I also ask ToyKeeper about the same question. Again, due to the brass pill, and I’m no good at soldering (or probably my soldering iron is also underpowered at just 40watts), I haven’t been able to take it apart to reflash Biscotti to check it that will reset the timing.

Later on since I also got the Convoy C8 with Biscotti, I notice the Biscotti in the Convoy C8’s are fine (not too fast), but the one on the Desert Sand is really fast.
(I recall TK asked me to count the bike flash blinks per minute, and noticed that one on the S2+ are nearly twice as fast as the blink on the Convoy C8 Biscotti.)

Sorry, wasn’t able to help you. My S2+ Desert Sand doesn’t have that much usage though (I usually use an Astrolux S1 more of the time, though I’m now also carrying the Emisar D4 Nichia in 18350 format)

I was a bit disappointed, given how great everything else has been. I sent him a video of the issue, and he basically replied “yep, that’s how some are”.

@d_t_a, you don’t need to solder at all if you have 4 or less of the regulator chips, you just need the clip and a programmer.
