Swollen Li IonCell Phone Battery

A few weeks ago I changed the internal battery in my Moto X and I laid the old battery on my metal top tool bench. The connector broke off after removal, but because I was replacing it I didn’t think anything of it. I had plans to take it and have it recycled with some other e-scrap. I just had not got around to it yet. I noticed today the entire battery was swollen. It doesn’t feel hot in any way. Does this indicate the battery vented? Can it short itself further? I’m not sure what to do with it. Not to comfortable about transporting it. Just curious about the danger at this point. Any thoughts?

Put it in a bucket of salt water and wait for a few days.

Then throw it out with the terminals taped, and go recycle it to the drop off point for lithium ion pack you have nearest to you.

It’s not swollen anymore when it has vented.
By the looks of it, the gas pressure is not that high (when you took the picture).

To be sure it has vented or not, try to flatten it subtly.

I have a garden, so i can puncture it myself safely and let the chemicals do their thing before tossing it in the bin.
Had an old cellphone battery too some time ago, was also a little puffed up.
I hit it with an axe, but nothing happened, unfortunately…
So i chucked it in the trash later.
I didn’t read about a garbage truck on fire in the paper, so i suppose nothing bad happened. :stuck_out_tongue:
