Where can you buy big reflectors?

Since I got my Astrolux MF02 I am fascinated by throwers which light up targets kilometers away. Now I’m thinking about building a DIY thrower and I would like to try the effect of different leds (white flat, XHP35 HD E4, XHP50.2 dd) in a big reflector. I am looking for a source where you can buy very big reflectors, bigger than 8-9cm in diameter. Of course more than 10cm would be the absolute highlight. I thought about a replacement reflector for Astrolux MF04 or BLF GT but I can find no shop who sells them or any deep reflectors with 12cm diameter. The biggest reflector I found has 86mm diameter. Does anyone have a suggestion where such a reflector could be bought and what the estimated price would be?

Before there was the GT, there was no such reflector (large reflectors specifically suitable for leds instead of halogen ligh sources) being made anywhere but by some very specialised companies (think hundreds of dollars). And I can imagine that all current GT-sized reflectors that are in the various 12cm throwers that are popping up, all come from the same manufacturer. But I have not seen one fore sale separately yet.

How about Ledil Seanna?

You can get the GT reflector…or just about any reflector for any make of light out there, you just got to know who to ask…and never give up/in…… I have spare reflectors for every modded light I plan to keep. Persistence pays off in the long run!

Ask Ban of Kaidomain?

Thank you all for the fast and useful replies! :+1: I have seen many HID reflectors but I doubted their performance with leds.
Had a look at the Ledil Seanna, it’s maybe to big for me and with a reflector you might get more candela.
Thank you for the links, Enderman. Are these reflectors also for leds? Most of them seem to have the wrong focus point. And the price should be quite high.
Impressive collection, KawiBoy. Any hints who to ask for a spare reflector? Do you mind telling me the approximate cost of a GT reflector?
Yes, I will give it a try and write Kaidomain an email.

There are many options from the two companies I linked.
Some of the reflectors have the vertex aperture parallel to the focal plane, for example most of the PA12 series.
If it doesn’t, phoenix only charges $100 to modify a reflector so you can get any model cut appropriately so that it will work with LED.

They are expensive because they are properly made electroformed reflectors, not stamped sheet metal or turned aluminum.
If you’re going for large sizes then you should be using either electroformed or glass reflectors, because any of the other cheap stuff you find will not focus properly with something as small as an LED.

You might try Stratus Leds if a 125mm parabolic reflector is what you are looking for.

You are right, Enderman. These are very special reflectors even with different coating options. You could build a 2Mcd thrower :smiling_imp: with one of them. But for my first DIY thrower they might be to expensive and too big. Additionally I would need the rather expensive shipping to Europe.
This Stratus Leds reflector would be an option worth to consider. Unfortunately it is out of stock and their website seems to be shutting down.

I don’t think there are any other affordable options for reflectors bigger than the GT/MF04 then…

:+1: Neal is the “Man” thanks for all you do bro!

Thank you, Neal! :+1: :email:

Try at least a 6 week lead time… at least here in the US…

I will leave the big reflector project for the new year. Meanwhile I wanted to ask if some of you have already tried to compare a XHP35 Hi with a dedomed XHP50 or a dedomed XHP70. I know that the XHP70.2 produces a big and bright hotspot, reaching not much less than a XHP35. The die size of a XHP50 would be smaller though but it also puts out less light. So is a dedomed direct drive XHP50.2 similar in throw to a XHP35 but brighter?

The Stratus Leds 125mm diameter parabolic reflector is available on Amazon again.

Mouser has a few in stock right now…

One nice thing about the LEDiL optics and reflectors is that they have calculated the beam characteristics for a lot of LEDs with their products so you can spend less time guessing about performance if you just study their datasheets.

I hadn’t had much success focusing an XHP35 HI with one; though I had success with an XHP 70.2 - probably not the ideal throw LED. Great with COBs because all the light going all over kind of masks the imperfections near the center of the reflector - possibly from the brazing of the mounting ring and drilling of mounting holes.

I found these a while back… didn’t buy them but pretty inexpensive considering their size…

If you don’t mind waiting you can get them for half that price at CDI (which is what I did.) You should have provisions for adjustment in your build if you can’t make a custom MCPCB to work with the alignment pins on the bottom. (or mill an adapter plate out like I ended up doing.)
