First ever build

Hi everyone,

I am looking to “compose” my first DIY flashlight.
What I would like to build is an 18650 powered thrower with, off course, as much power as possible.
At the same time I do not want to spend a lot of money on my first build.

My parts-list so far:

  • Convoy C8 black flashlight host
  • 7135*8 5-mode 2800mA 17mm Driver
  • 10W XML2 L2 20MM PCB Neutral White 4500K

I would like to hear your thoughts on these parts, please be kind since I am still a n00b at this… Wink

Regards,
Witte

That’ll work. Where are you buying the parts?

If you want more throw you can use an XP-L HI.

XPL-HI will get you more throw. And a FET driver will get you more ie power if you have the right cell

Welcome aboard, be forewarned… this is addictive!

In the States, a good place to buy is from a forum member mtnelectronics.com. Richard has been a member here for a while and started the store in part to help us get parts faster for building and modding flashlights.

The Convoy C8 with an FET (+1) driver running an XP-L HI is about the best you can do for the monies involved. Ridiculous really how cheap it comes out for what it does… typically under $30, depending on if you have to buy a cell and a charger of course. Richard has those as well and good prices across the board.

Yeah, you got it. I’d agree with using the HI (vs HD) for a little less light but a bit more throw.

Unless you wanna push a dedomed/sliced XP-G2 pretty hard… Big Smile

Since I live in The Netherlands, I have to find a place where to get these parts. If not I could always order them in China.

do you have thermal paste? You should put that underneath the mcpcb(the copper plate the led sits on).

Hate it when that happens! My memory is bad enough that if the package takes too long to arrive I forget what it was for when it finally shows up!

The frustrating part is that I got the wrong host, I ordered black but got Tan.
So I am waiting for the new host, and the LED is lost Sad
Now looking to buy an other one, hope that one arrives quickly.

On a key part, like the LED, I will usually order two or three when I need one, so if I mess up somehow during the build I don’t have to do the waiting all over again.

These days, with so many multi emitter lights, I find myself buying 20, 30, even 50 emitters at a time!

So, today was the day of the build.
Finally I received the LED so I was good to go.

The pictures below show some build-results. (Still need to take some beam shots)

I actually like that tan/gold color a lot! I just built a clear anodized one and pretty happy with it so far…

Nice first build. Doesn’t the C8+ use a pill? The C8 uses a pill so you could easily swap the pill (with emitter and driver) for a different one. But the lack of a pill ensures better thermals so you can drive the led harder. If you don’t need the throw you could also swap the reflector for an Orange peel (OP) reflector.

By the way what tint did you pick? https://flashlightwiki.com/images/c/cb/Ansi-white.jpg
