Is XT60 waterproof?

I have lamp with separate battery box, connected with wire.
The lamp and the battery box are both ip68 rated.
I want to add a connector along the wire so I can change the battery box.

If I use XT60 (which is not IP rated) connector, will it still be possible to use the lamp under water?

There is no o-ring or anything in an XT60, so I would say it’s not waterproof.

I am aware water can get inside the connector, BUT I checked using a multi-meter and there is no short circuit while the connector is submerged and it is gold plated so corrosion is not an issue. So what is the risk?

If the water is more conductive (like salt water for example) there could be significant current flow. It wouldn’t be a short circuit, but I think it might be large enough to drain batteries. And deposits might form on the electrodes when the current flows.

So it depends on what water it will be in and the duration whether it will be an issue or not.

I see you are a caver, so the water most likely won’t be salt water, but could have a lot of dissolved minerals making it conductive. I would test the current that flows when the electrodes are submerged in some typical cave water.

If the water enters the connector there is a possibility that it will enter the flashlight and the battery pack trough the cable.
I have seen cable’s act like hoses more then once.
