I would recommend Xeno E03 XM-L . It can also use a 14500 li-ion rechargeable battery, you may want to go that rout later on after you get into flashlights.

You can choose between 3 colors, black, red and blue. Also you can choose the LED tint, cool white, neutral white, warm white.
Is there anything that's holding you to AA or AAAs? If not then my suggestion would be a nice P60 host like the Solarforce L2 with a drop-in rated from 3-6v. This allows you to use an 18650 rechargeable li-ion for normal use but also allows you to use 2 CR123s in a pinch. You can keep a few packs of 123s for an emergency (they store for 10 years) and use the rechargeable for day-to-day use to keep battery costs down.
If you are in the US this is especially good since you would receive it in just a few days from Bryan. Great service. That was actually the first LED flashlight that I bought. As a bonus you could run it on 1 x CR123a if you want.
Sipik Sk-68 is also a good, cheap flashlight ($8 shipped or less). Love mine! Very bright on 14500 and will still run on 1 X AA if you need to. Good flood, good throw when zoomed.
Another option that is highly spoke of around here is the Romisen RC-29 which you can get for $15 shipped from DX. Like the SK-68 it will run on 1 X 14500 or 1 X AA, and is very bright on 14500. Flood or zoom. This is my next purchase.
Check out the Fenix E21...Fenix quality and its dead simple...Clicky at back. Twist between high and low. (Price should be about 30USD shipped - check Amazon I think...lots of good reviews on Amazon too for this light.)
LED Lenser P7 ain't a bad light that runs on 4 AAA batteries. I got one off ebay for like $27 brand new. There is a company that selling them new for like $30. I don't remember the name. It's got a turbo, high and low mode.
