Is there a new XPL-HD LED?

Just curious, is there a "new" type of XPL-HD LED?

These are both Astrolux S1, that are supposed to have XPL-HD LEDs. But the one on the right looks a bit different..

This is a pair of Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 (supposed to both be XPL-HD), but the one on the right looks a bit different from the XPL-HD I'm familiar with.

Now, I tried comparing a flashlight that has XP-L2, and another one that's supposed to be "XPL-HD", they seem to look quite similar

(left: Sofirn SP32A with XP-L2 LED, right: Astrolux S1 with "XPL-HD" LED)

In you last photo they are both XP-L2.
They appear to not be of the same color temperature.

You should see the difference in the tint of the XPL2 (it’s got an ugly green corona)

Yes, that’s what I noticed too, slightly ‘uglier’ corona / artifacts.

So I guess, even when the manufacturer / supplier says they are “XPL-HD”, they are really “XP-L2” (and not some ‘new kind’ of XPL-HD)…

Thanks for the response. Just had to confirm in case I was wrong…

So it looks like both the Astrolux S1, Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 and the Reylight Pineapple Brass (which are supposed to ship with XPL-HD LED, now come with XP-L2 LED instead).

you have two threads going, maybe they should be merged?

check my reply to that thread, and let us know which LED you ID

This is from the Cree website - Cree® XLamp® XP-L LEDs:

So it seems they’re just naming the XP-L HD LED as “XPL-HD”.

Just remember HD is domed and Hi is dedomed
XPL2 is always HD since the Hi is never released as 2
The drawback of the XPL2 is the ugly corona, as mentioned before. Better to give in some lumens for a better tint, such as the XPL-HD 3D from the original Q8
