Visitors in the mountains

I have not had much luck recently with having the game camera setup in the right place. There are hoof tracks all over the place. I finally got lucky. Here is a short video of a small group of 5 deer out for a morning walk.

Gotta name the rest of them, like Surly, Wheezy, and Grouchy, too.

Nice shot Don

We have about 6 apple trees (a couple have multiple grafted varieties) just outside my computer station window. There was a steady stream of blacktail while they were dropping. We let our nabors harvest what they want and my wife has one tree she reserves for her own canning and baking. There has never been a shortage of forage every morning during the season just now about to end.

She named a few of the visitors. “Scruffy” had a real bad skin condition on one side and the others chased him away. She fed him apples and other fruit/veggies until his coat healed and he could no longer be discerned from the herd. “Gimpy” had a broken hind leg butt got along pretty well even bounding up the game trail on the mountain across the road. Haven’t seem him/her for awhile. Nature is rough. “Reject” was a tiny spotted fawn with no visible parent at all. In fact she was chased when attempting to approach other family units. She did seem to feed normally though, and was allowed to stay close to a forked horn male as he nested under our largest tree. She took forever to lose her spots, butt I believe she made it.

Just this year’s herd. We have been here since 2000. Never plan on moving.

Almost forgot “Frito” although he mostly preferred the cheapest, saltiest tortilla chips we could find. Only one that would come onto the deck or porch trying to mooch while I BBQed. I’m afraid we might have sealed his fate by humanizing him. No more.
