I think that I know the answer, but is there an LED that has a beam profile that is between a CREE XR-E and an XP-G? I'm not aware of one, but I'd like to find one if it exists for future builds.
So far my meager collection consists of mostly P60 and C8 based lights, so I'll concentrate my efforts there for right now.
My up-coming projects include adding a LED light mount to my binoculars and one for my DV camera.
Think of improving my vision in the 70 - 150 yards range.
No aspherics please.

Perhaps an XP-E might suit your needs.
I would think that a slightly defocused aspheric setup would be perfect for the described app.
