RC-29 driver upgrade?

Hi Y'all

Dino Direct done me wrong. They sent me 2 Romisen RC-29 lights with AA only one mode drivers.

The LED is XR-E Q5.

I don't have a caliper but the driver looks like 15mm on a ruler.

Can anyone suggest a good driver for this that can use 14500 cells?

Prefer LMH only if possible.

Shiningbeam has some AA drivers, with 900mA and 1A drive levels, IIRC.

CNQG just started carrying some AA boost drivers, but I haven't received them yet for testing.

I should have mentioned that I would prefer a board for 14500 cells.

RC-29 driver upgrade?

somewhere ;) i mentioned that the ease and cost of upgradability is favorable with this torch (e.g. compared with the ease and cost of upgradability of a Zebralight SC80). With this i was thinking: the driver is easy to exchange because it is a screw-in pill, and if you have a similar spare pill from "somewhere", e.g. old RC-29 or new RC-29, then you could easily swap the pill. And it is easy and cheap to get a new driver .. simply by ordering a full new torch from DX: for 14.99$ you get a bunch of spare parts (call them "accessories"!): a new lens, a new 3-mode driver with 14500 support, a new body/head/bezel/tail, etc.

so instead of buying a driver (for 4.50$ plus shipping?, i guess?) from somewhere, i'd rather buy a new RC-29 (ok, this time from DX for sure!).

With a Zebralight and a broken driver you cannot simply say "ah lemme buy another unit and exchange the bad driver with the brand new driver". Economically irrational.

With the RC-29 it is imho economically rational to buy a full new RC-29 (because i love mine!!) just to get a wealth of spare parts.

With the Tank E09 i did the same. I luv the torch that much that i ordered a total of 4 units. 1 unit for my friend, and 3 units for myself: i swapped parts (especially looking for the best reflector: beam pattern), and "the worst unit" is going to be a potential gift.

Good luck with finding an inexpensive(!) driver. It may not exist .. the torch was 14.99$ only!!

probably won't be the reflector rather the centering of the emmitter or the bin that makes any difference .. nice to have multiple lights that you can get super anal about which one is the best of the best ..or seems brightest//best tint etc

twice, and i was thinking about asking the exact same question. i still would consider modding it to accept 14500's if i could find a driver that would really drive it hard, but the reality is it is a really really good AA light, and, as kreisler said, it is almost not really worth it because the whole lights are so cheap.

Why didn't I think of that?

Using that method, I can upgrade my old VW by removing all of the parts that say VW and replacing them with ones that say BMW.

If I can't find something better, I will just use this one from DX, it is 1 mode and for 14500 only but its only $2.36

The pill comes out very easily.

BTW, I tried it on 14500 already and it did not fry. It just makes a bright flash and goes off. The driver is protected, it looks like. Still works fine on AA.

for $2.36. what do you mean bright flash and goes off?

after i've applied silicone grease on the few bare aluminum threads ("disassembly"!) and the o-rings, and superlube oil on the zooming threads (and its hidden o-ring), i adore my RC-29a even more!

no more rattling! ( the aluminum lens cup tends to unthread too easily. now with silicone grease in the threads i cant screw it out anymore lol! )

With the lubed o-rings and threads and no more (possible) rattling sounds the torch feels da*n premium hehe

I don't have the new driver yet. I mean that I tried a 14500 in the AA light and it just flashed and went off, it still works fine on AA stock driver with a AA.

so it didn't actually fry it, but it doesn't run on one either. yeah?

what driver the good, older c78's used. mine still runs strong on AA's and 14500's.

Thanks for the tip about CNQG, lots of interesting stuff.

Here is the link for everyone:

Why noy get one of those sipik 68 clones got around $7 and gut it for the driver? Seems to b the same driver that cnqy has ?

This driver would work fine for 14500 but you would no longer be able to use AA based on it opperating voltage 2.7v - 6v

Using the driver from a sipik clone might just give you the option of AA or 14500....I love options
