nah, it’s not pure white, if you look at the spectrum of that “white laser”, you will see 3 distinct peak in wavelength

Anyone have any ideas how long it takes until LEP-tech becomes cheaper? Then the bigger question: Is LEPs ever going to be useful in flashlights? Now they just seems like toys to play without any real use.
Maybe they could have some use when boating in dark and spotting seamarks or something like that.

Not that I’m familiar with LEP stuff, but I do think that LEP could be useful in flashlight application since LEP technology has already been used in some premium automotive headlights AFAIK. It’s all about the configuration I guess, it may work differently from the LEDs but we may just need more experiments to find out.

What I’d like to see done with LEP:

• a zoomie
• a reflector instead of an aspheric lens.

I understand how a zoomie would potentially increase the utility of an LEP by changing the thrower beam in to a flood pattern. However, I understand LEPs to not have much inherent spill or flood. How would a reflector benefit the system?

For a short-range light a LEP zoomie would be pretty terrible. Something like 200-500 lumens in pure flood. It would match the output of a $10 zoomie. However, from what I’ve read some LEP zoomies aren’t usable below 800 meters or so due to the tiny size of the hotspot. Having one that you could slightly defocus the spot to make it usable at say 100m might make it easier to find what you want to illuminate.

It’s better to match a $10 zoomie than it is to be beaten by it - by being too intense to be usable. No, I think that if you make a zoomie you should give it a full range rather than artificially reduce it.
