Need recommendation for my first general purpose 18650 flashlight (Zanflare F1, Eagle Eye X6R, Convoy C8)

Beam0 , in the description , it says it changes power levels by way of a tail switch but I don’t see one? Is it a dual switch light or is that a mistake? LVP?

Think they made a mistake. Don’t believe that light has a tail switch. I had one and don’t remember a tail switch.

Thanks.Did you like it ? LVP ?

Yes I did like it. Nice little light. Simple and basic. I think I remember something about LVP but I am not absolutely positive. I didn’t have it very long. My oldest son liked it more than I needed it. I probably wouldn’t have given it to him without protected batteries or LVP and I don’t have any protected batteries.

I remember the tint was a bit on cool side but not horrible blue or anything. Think around 6000k or so. OP reflector gave it a pretty nice smooth and wide beam with good amount of spill. If you don’t mind the 6000k I bet you would really like it.

There is a warm tint choice.I think 3500.I would prefer

something in between. It doesn’t fit protected cells ,thus my LVP question.Specs say it steps down but no mention of shut off.Especially with a side button ,I would feel better with protection.

@beam0, thank you a lot for showing the light!

With an LH351D, it looks like an almost perfect light., especially with a magnetic tail.

Thank you a lot!

On The Road U18, ordered. Thanks .

No tail switch. Sorry I didn’t notice the typo’s (Thanks for pointing it out.) It appears that whole section of the description in gearbest’s listing is for a different light!

In addition to the reference to a tail switch it also shows the emitter is XM-L2 and that it has low voltage step down. AFAIK it has XPL V6 and no low voltage step down. (It does have temperature control step down)

I’m pretty sure my M6 has low voltage warning (main LED flashes) I almost never let my cells run low I’m pretty anal about checking/charging after longer use so I can’t remember for sure. I wasn’t sure if it accepted protected-length cells. (my M6 doesn’t, it’s a cell top crusher with a raised flattop GA) It looks like Todd is saying the U18 also won’t fit protected-length cells. It will do mechanical lockout (un twist the tail)

Here’s links for the U18 in On The Road’s aliexpress store, which I believe is run by the mfg:

.

You’re welcome! This light has been around for a while but for some reason has received very little attention, I’ve not seen a review of it.

I came across it again recently looking at it’s little brother 16340 version, which I’m thinking I should have bought instead of a Jetbeam E20R.
(The OTR has a better UI and the 5C tint option)

Also this years OTR U16 and U18 have been upgraded to USB Type-C

Here’s links to the Type-C versions:

U16 Type-C: Page Not Found - Aliexpress.com
U18 Type-C: Page Not Found - Aliexpress.com

(Gearbest, Banggood and amazon also sell the U16 but I’m not sure they have the Type-C version)

OTR’s aliexpress store also still lists the non Type-C versions as well

There are reviews for the U16 on YouTube and reddit, but I haven’t had time to look at them.

Did you order it from Gearbest?
$25 is a great price for it but I think it’s the 2017 version with regular micro USB…

I posted links above for the 2018 version upgraded with Type-C USB

Personally I’m not sure I need or want Type-C, so I’m also considering the Gearbest deal. But I’m somewhat interested in the little brother 16340 version.

I ordered the GB $25 one. Not sure which USB version. I’m ok with the older version though. I’m hoping to EDC this 18650. Up til now I carry a 14500 but the longer run time is enticing . I hate weight in my pocket though.

Did you get the 5C or 1A tint?

The only other compact size USB light in that price range I know of (with a decent UI) is the UltraTac S20 (100mm length) it’s 5mm shorter but only available in CW:
https://www.amazon.com/UltraTac-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Ultra-Compact-Waterproof/dp/B078WV27B1

You can still get the OTR M6 (Olight S20 clone) but it doesn’t have USB, and it’s actually a few mm longer than the U18:
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/ON-THE-ROAD-M6-Mini-flashlight-rechargeable-LED-flashlight-for-camping-hiking-Professional-waterproof-torch/3081046_32848592173.html?spm=2114.12010612.0.0.5fea2989JZU32i

The M6 is more of a “tube” style light as it’s 23.5mm diameter at both the head and tail. I also like it has the stainless bezel.
The U18 has a bit chunkier head at 26.5mm but hopefully that means the reflector is a bit larger.

OTR used to offer 3C (5000K) in the M6 but now it appears they only offer 1A or 5C for it and the U16/U18.

I’m really surprised there hasn’t been much mention about the U18 on BLF, please post here after you get it, I’m looking forward to your feedback on it.

Yes, it's a good C8

The On The Road U18 does have Low Voltage Protection, when low voltage (not sure what voltage), the indicator button first indicates steady red, then slow-blinking red, then fast-blinking red, then finally turn off (not sure what voltage).

An annoyance for some people is the hold down button (for maybe 0.5 seconds) to turn on/off.

Just ran across this Skillhunt over on the Gearbest thread. Looks promising.

Do you have a U18?

Just to clarify, the flashlight finally turns off (shutdown)? Or the indicator button light finally turns off?

The indicator button is not Low Voltage Protection, only a low voltage warning system, I’m sure you’re aware of this though so I assume you own one and it actually has shutdown.

I’ve been looking at that one too, was going to post it here but you beat me to it.

It’s over the OP’s budget, but it seems he’s disappeared anyhow.

  • Also 105mm length (104.5mm)
  • Available in NW 4500-5000K
  • Stainless bezel and magnetic tail.
  • Copper MCPCB
  • Magnetic charge adapter, although a proprietary cable.
  • Has LVP shutdown when voltage drops below 2.8v
  • UI basic operation is very similar to OTR U18
  • Shortcut to memorized mode and way more levels, 8 total - 2 for each mode (hidden double-click sub levels).

Looks real nice, I really like it… although the price is pretty steep, I’ll be keeping an eye out for a coupon/code/deal on this.

I am really liking it. Think I will bite on this one in the next few days. Will take a day or two and hunt for a code but I can see that one being my new go to EDC. I like the sub levels and what seems to be it remembering what sub level you used last and keeping the levels that way until you change them again. Really like the mode spacing and customizing of them. The blinky’s are hidden and not in the modes anywhere without a triple click. I like the options from off of starting on low, starting on turbo, or starting from memory. Very nice UI I think.

I’m sure many will complain about it but I don’t care. I like it.

Todd, I couldn’t agree more about the UI, and all the great features this has, please let me know if you find a code.

I’ve been looking at this ever since it came out in the gearbest thread, and actually even longer in a way…
Last year I came across their DS21 / DS21-HI models that had been recently discontinued, I really liked them so I contacted Skilhunt about them and they replied there would be an upgraded version in the future, so I assume this is the upgrade of the DS21.

DS21-HI (discontinued): DS21 HI Flashlight – LED Headlamp │ Tactical Flashlight
DS21 (discontinued): http://www.skilhunt.com/product-detail/ds21-flashlight/

And wow, they weren’t kidding about upgrades!
Since it’s about the same size (a few mm shorter) this will be a great upgrade to my trusty OTR M6 that I keep handy everywhere I go.

Something else I can’t help thinking is if this will fit an 18350 tube like the Skilhunt H02 that can use the Astrolux S1/BLF A6 tube. I have a strong feeling it will fit.

I had an H20 and it was a great light, my favorite EDC until it began having issues then finally died, I admit I did abuse it and that was after more than a year of really hard use and many drops. I once left it mounted by it’s tail magnet on the frame under my SUV and drove about 300 miles, didn’t remember it was there till the next day, it was still there and still on!

The proprietary cable is a deal breaker. Ideally a phone micro USB cable is perfect for EDC.
