Hey all. The three colors are in production but I don’t have an exact time-frame. The purple will be darker and hopefully a little more blue.
The copper S2+ was a limited production run and unfortunately there will not be more in the near future. It will probably happen but not in the next few months based on what Simon tells me.
A stainless S2+ is not likely unless there were extremely high demand. As ToyKeeper mentioned, stainless does not shed heat well so power would need to be relatively low and the light would be heavy. I do like the idea of stainless for a AA sized version of the S2+ though.
Since we seem to be using this thread to chat about general ideas for Convoy products - Simon should sell a flat tailcap for the S9. The current design makes the light just as long as the S2+, and it’s not a very practical tripod mount either.
Drat. I have five stock S2+ lights in various configurations, and lots of hosts for assorted experiments. Barring a major upgrade or something really new, I’m unlikely to buy much more stuff from Convoy.
Assuming I could afford them, I’d buy at least six stainless steel S2+ hosts, one or two at a time.
I might even buy one or two stock lights as well - I like to have a scattering of stock lights around, so I always have a known good light of that type to fall back on if I fry, break or lose the one I was tinkering with.
That is true, although for my belt EDC, I’m willing to tolerate the weight in exchange for indestructibility. I carried an Astrolux S41S on my belt for several months, before changing to a Desert Tan S2+ because I needed throw more than raw output.
For a stainless steel S2, I’d be using a 3×7135 Biscotti driver and a Nichia 219B 90 CRI 5000K LED.
Alternatively, how about an 18650 tube light with a stainless steel bezel, body and tailcap, but a copper head section? In the vein of an Astrolux S41S, but single LED, S2+ SMO reflector, Biscotti driver and Convoy quality control instead of Astrolux shoddiness.
Agreed that hydro-dipping would not be ideal (just paint). However, that pattern is completely do-able in anodizing, if one has the right tools, talent, and is willing to “paint” each one by hand.
For examples of wild anodizing patterns, just Google image-search: “Abel fishing reels”. That is the first company that comes to mind that does such anodizing, and they’ve been doing it for decades.
I noticed the samples don’t have the groove in the head to make the clip reversible.
Are these colors going to configured like the newer desert tan and clear models with the groove, updated firmware and/or AR glass, or like the older ones that lack those features?
I recognize that continuous product improvement is a good thing, and that these are niche products, but the array of different permutations can be dizzying.
This cries out for a feature grid, which would probably be helpful even for some hobbyists.
Good catch! Thank you for pointing out the missing groove. It may just have been because these are just color samples but I alerted Simon just in case and he’s reaching out the factory. Hopefully the production run will have both grooves as intended.
The new colors should be configured with the updated firmware, DTP copper MCPCB, AR coated glass…essentially the same as the DT and Clear ano versions. I can only speak for Simon’s store though. If BG or another reseller buys a large quantity they dictate what options they want to sell and often they choose the old 3/5 driver. They can order however they like so your options are more limited. Ordering directly through the Convoy store all the options and variations are available. I hear you regarding the dizzying array of options and I like the idea of having something like a feature grid. The number of possible configurations is getting pretty high for the S2+. Thanks for the input. :+1:
Oh and I have a few pictures of the new purple. I wouldn’t mind seeing it even darker but the new color is much more to my liking than the first purple sample.
Here is the new color.
Here is the new color next to the original sample for comparison.
If you need to get rid of some of the lights with a groove at one end, I know a guy that can help you out. Itching to get me one of those orange lights, these look great!
My apologies… For some reason I was not getting notifications of new posts in my email.
I will try to find out tomorrow for you…
Just to clarify (not that I have to )… I have never owned an S2, never done business nor conversed with Simon before (that I know of) . I buy a thing or two here and there on FT, GB and AliEx…
Having said that, I saw the copper S2+ on Neal’s page on FB… I tried several methods to get Neal’s attention, with NO substantive response…
Sooooo I simply went on AliEx, found the Convoy store and sent an inquiry - “I am looking for a Copper (not copper colored.) Convoy S2+ . Do you know of this, I understand it is coming out ? ”
I got a simple answer ‘a few in stock, not cheap’, with a price… So I asked if he had one in the configuration I wanted (driver, UI, etc etc) …. Boom, a link to a one time listing.
All this happened a week or two after I first saw it on FB….
I basically did some slight detective work and tracked it down myself. I turned one other guy onto it via PM and asked Simon for another with the other reflector…
Simon is a small operation, not capable of having a backlog of mismatched various colored parts waiting for someone to order them. He really does like pleasing people, but some of the directions he’s asked to go would have him bankrupt in short order due to his good nature. Which is why it’s a good idea to have a representative here (JDub74) that can communicate a greater interest and try to convince Simon to make gradual change. Sudden large scale changes are probably never going to happen, just not feasible.
I can turn a heat sink on my lathe, sure I can, but ask me to turn 250 of them and it’d be a simple and straight away “No”. I can’t buy the stock, can’t spend the time, can’t hold the bits and pieces… not financially able to and not willing to at all otherwise. From my understanding of how things work over there, Simon (Convoy) is in a similar position. The small guy. Aiming to please but lacking the deep pockets to develop things on a grander scale.
He IS trying some new things, but it’s a slow process.
