TK's Emisar D4 review

:open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Wow! Beauties 4 sure!

Coscar, I got my D1S today. Love it!

Which battery is best for this 30Q or sony VTC6? (looks like VTC6 is 30A vs 15A for the 30Q)

Same here, mostly. I generally keep one clipped at my waist where it canā€™t be seen under clothing, so my EDC needs to be fairly small/light and have a good clip.

Hah, and the Emisar firmware is far simpler than Narsil or Anduril. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Weā€™ve got 3400+ posts here about it, and in at least one of the facebook flashlight groups people have gotten so sick of hearing about Emisar that some have proposed banning the topic. Itā€™s certainly getting a lot of praise.

(the proposals were not taken seriously, but still)

As for group buysā€¦ Iā€™m not sure why Hank is secretive about what he makes before release, but that seems to be how he likes doing things. Given how often things in China get cloned (even before the original launches), I canā€™t say I blame him. Like the original fidget cubeā€¦ between its announcement and its shipping date, literally dozens of different clones were created and beat the original to market.

Thatā€™s one aspect of what Iā€™ve been doing here these past few years, though my aim is a bit bigger than that. Iā€™ve been pushing for companies to actively participate in communities in a mutually-beneficial manner instead of just treating communities as marketing opportunities and sources of profit.

While I agree it probably could have been improved a bit more at very little cost, some things would carry significant costs or tradeoffs. Like, adding a third power channel (FET+N+1 design) would involve making the light bigger and causing difficulties with the front spring.

In general, perfection isnā€™t feasible, and beyond about 80% things suffer from diminishing returns. The perfect is the enemy of the good, as they say. So I canā€™t really fault anyone for calling a project done when it still has 10% or 20% worth of potential improvement to be made.

Uh-oh.

I get the feeling that D1S may have only a short time remaining before it gets chopped up. What kind of frankensteinery do you see in its future?

I got it this afternoon around 3:30, am on my 3rd iteration of refinement.

Having a few dilemmaā€™s, itā€™s at 2290.8 lumens at the momentā€¦

A couple of questions, is there no strobe, and please forgive my ignorance, but why 18500 instead of 18650? or are they interchangeable?

1BW, there are 3 battery tube lengths available, 18650 as default and 18500/18350 as options. Itā€™s more about compactness and options than interchangeability as the shorter cells are also weaker, so optimum performance is through the default tube length with carry options coming in the more compact options.

Added some Ultra Green V10 GITD paint to 2 of the 4 standoffs, in addition to the 3M GITD 6900 luminous tape I applied previously.
The V10 is some bright stuff.

Less is more (better)!
It acts as quite a thermal glove, indicating what is going on with all wrapped batteries. Full coverage keeps the hand too cool.
A wide waistband gets rid of the dirty palm sensation I personally dislike, traction on the fingertips helps with control, and color options allow for custom personalizations.

Purple screams ā€œgift for Debbieā€

Thank you! I was confused, on both websites it seemed like you had to choose between the 18500/18350. Now, is there a strobe? Iā€™m running out of reasons not to order oneā€¦

It would be great if they offer a 20700 variant.

^ and/or 16500

The 16340/18350 can feel too short, an 18500 too thick, Efest has a 900mah 16500 high drain vape cell.
Mr. W. can step the tube end down as MecArmy has been doing, using the same size head.
Indications are that he likes selling extra tubes, and filling a niche for a bunch of addicts.

You know we can quit at any time, but we are not quitters! :stuck_out_tongue:

TK, what I meant about perfection, at least from my viewpoint, and the D4 is close to it now, was specifically about the pocket clip. If another mind had suggested it, and the suggestion implemented, the clip could have been designed in and the O-ring that may or may not be doing itā€™s job with the clips weā€™re using* would have been properly placed for water tightness. As it is now, the clip that IMO works best could also be degrading the water resistance.

Looking at perfection from your perspective, something I canā€™t do, I can see where the last 20% would be expensive to achieve. But most things are like that. That last 20% is always the most difficult and expensive to remedy.

*The best solution Iā€™ve found so far is one suggested in this thread, it has the ring that gets opened up and goes between the body and base. I donā€™t remember the brand name.

Has no one tried the pocket clip from Hankā€™s site?
Once itā€™s on it ainā€™t coming off in a hurry ,itā€™s very good.

Link?

Choose pocket clip , itā€™s also where you chose the different tubes.

Thanks. I never knew it existed since I bought mine from Mountain and I didnā€™t see it there. I was looking in components on Hanks site.

So my complaint about no clip turns out to be about my lack of knowledge. Itā€™s not the first time that I need to remove my foot from my mouth.
