The Utorch SF-01 just arrived at my doorstep. Nice ano, hardly any knurling, except for the tailcap.
But fear not, for when things get slippery, there is always a sturdy two-sided clip to cling to.
With the light comes a rather short generic holster and a on-sided printed manual in a generic box.
The manual says nothing about programming, but states that the head and the tailcap are interchangeable.
The picture in the manual says otherwise, because you can clearly see male and female threads.
Can’t provide any physical evidence because I was unable to separate head and body by manual force.
So I can’t tell what is inside the front of the light. But it has a regular sized tail-spring.
The switch looks to be fixated by a retaining ring but the it comes off in one piece and feels like a press-fit pill.
The trademark of this light is on the front side.
It enables the use of CR1213A, AA and even AAA primary batteries. The manual says: Voltage: 3.0V.
With a CR123A battery, the battery is stopped by a ledge, another spring makes contact on the front side.
This front spring proves to be very supple, because on inserting an AA battery, it protrudes past this ledge.
The actual inner diameter of that part of the body is about 14.5mm. The rear end diameter remains 17.3mm.
The front spring can easily handle CR123A (16*34mm) and AA (14*50mm) batteries.
When it comes to size alone, the same could be expected for AAA (10*44mm) batteries.
But I would not use these without adding a sleeve because the battery can easily get lop-sided (skew).
I got my 3 last night and played with them for several hours. Here are some quick impressions.
- Out of the box I thought all 3 were defective as they flickered in all modes. However they started acting more consistently the more I used them.
- Surprisingly programming them into other modes made them rock-solid from that point on. Flickering stopped and the strobe mode actually worked (and thankfully can be programmed out).
- Modes are low/high, high/strobe/low, and high only.
- No memory so low/high starts in low and high/strobe/low starts in high.
- Tint is a little on the cool side but not bad.
- Well formed hot spot with no ringing that I can see.
- Forward clicky switch has good feel to it.
- Head doesn’t come off and as mentioned don’t appear to be interchangeable.
- Appears to be well made and feels good and solid in my hands. No visible flaws on any of them.
- Surprisingly they are brighter for me on AA NiMh than a CR123 that measured 2.9v on my meter. Not sure why that’s the case but all 3 are that way.
- AA battery is solid in it and didn’t move at all when I shook the light as hard as possible and slapping it against my leg. I wouldn’t be concerned about having an AA battery slip to the side in it.
- AAA battery works well enough if you don’t slap or throw the light around but it will slip/not make contact if you hit it hard enough.
- Cheapest holsters I’ve ever seen but one gets what one pays for.
- Not a small light; it’s virtually the same size as my Skilhunt H02.
- High lasted for 2+ hours on a worn-out Tenergy battery before it turned off. I didn’t notice any warning before it did so but then again I wasn’t paying much attention to it.
In my opinion they’re good basic flashlights and to give away for people who just need a flashlight. For 3 for $8.99 I wish I had bought more of them 
Just noticed that when the tail cap is screwed down on an AA battery on one of the flashlight that it would light on a half-press but not turn on when fully pressed. Re-screwing it made it work so maybe there’s something going on in the driver. Kind of goes together with the things I experienced when I first got the lights.
My three came today. Glad I did not pay full price. Took me awhile to get 1 of the 3 going. Had to cut some of the tail spring off to make it work with AA. Head will not come off without a fight so I gave up. Low power blue tint. The nylon belt pouches fit
.380 LCP mags perfectly so that alone covers the $9.99. The 10 tap programming works but it is hard to tell low from high. 14500 did make it brighter but a protected cell is too long. AAA works but I did not have a CR123 to try. I suppose for AA SHTF, throw in the tool box lights they are OK.
I think SIGShooter summed up the SF01 pretty well, but I’d like to add that the PWM is visible and audible on low modes.
If it wasn’t for the low frequency PWM I’d be tempted to get another as I quite like the two-mode forward-click setup.
I paid $6 delivered. Still a good deal.
A Keeppower 14500 protected battery fits in mine.
It took me a while to master the ten-tap.
I think the default setting is ridiculous. (high,strobe,low)
I like the “cheap holster” I find alot of holsters are unnecessarily bulky.
I like the clip. I only use them on hat visors.
The low frequency PWM isn’t visible to me. I can only hear it if I put it close to my ear.
I have grown to appreciate mine more . The forward clicky is a little strange when changing groups and modes. Decent lights for the price in retrospect.
