Which movie did you watch lastֻ

Yup, Falling Down is definitely a classic.

I don't think my sister has seen it, and I told her that she really needs to.

Falling Down is very good movie. Ask yourself how man times in fast food you wanted do the same?

The Outcasts
comedy about the usual high school dramas. #VictoriaJustice

Absolutely!

At least the trailer’s nicely misleading while still showing it to be interesting. I figured any hint at the actual story would ruin it.

“”I Am Mother”:I Am Mother (2019) - IMDb. Sci-fi flick on NetFlix with Hilary Swank.

Started out great… went rather wonky. Ending was bizarre. I thought this could’ve been better.

EDIT: there’s a reviewer on YouTube who did a pretty good job of explaining the ending. I might rewatch last 30 mins with that in mind.

Limerence”, a lighter rom-com of sorts. Recced it to the gf based on the description and especially reviews, and she wasn’t terribly keen on it, so I had to watch it myself to see.

Yeah, the first part of the movie was rather trashy, gril just meets a guy, doesn’t even know/remember his name, but sexes him up regardless, plus other characters have rather explicit sex-talk that I couldn’t even compare to locker-room talk at its worst. Basically, it wasn’t… natural… at least not with any semi-normal people I know.

It did get better, though, once the drama started. At least all the screwiness in her head bubbles up to the surface, and you can sort of figure her out. In fact, a lot bubbled up to the surface what was hidden: one’s hidden feelings for another, the “happy couple” that wasn’t so happy after all, and so on. In that sense it was pretty good. But it was a weird ride in the beginning to get to that point.

And now we have the other extreme. Great movies like “Final Kill” and “The Ascent” get trashed in the ratings by evidently some review hit-squad, but I thought the movies were quite good. And here, well, I guess the cast and/or crew uniformly 10ed this “hidden gem” in the glowing 1- or 2-liner reviews (sans one). It was okay, but far from a “hidden gem”.

Unno, I think I’ll stick to zombies and robots…

I saw Red State (2011).

Despite the name of the movie, it is not about politics, which is good because I don't generally watch political movies.

It's directed by Kevin Smith, who is better known for directing and acting in raunchy comedies.

Red State is part horror and part action.

It is pretty uneven.

The acting is pretty good, and I don't remember much about the music, so I guess the music was okay.

It's a pretty weird movie, and if it weren't so uneven, it'd be a lot better.

John Goodman is in the film, and he is a joy to watch.

Overall, the movie is just okay.

It's not great, not horrible, and not really worth recommending either.

That’s good, too! I’m keeping my ebook version.

Anyone here see Annihilation

Tusk (2014) by Kevin Smith
An alleged Horror movie with no interesting characters and a goofy plot. Torture porn without torture (except for my patience). The best part of the movie is a podcast interview with Kevin Smith where he is either laughing at the movie, the studio or the audience.

So bad the biggest star doesn’t have his real name in the credits.

Not yet, but it looks interesting. Should put it on my list…

Wow. The only thing it seems to be missing is Eric Roberts.

First up, “Panzer Chocolate”. Yeah, I’m not kidding. WW2 Nazi tins of chocolate with that Special Formula (hint: they didn’t add Crystal Light), PC is the branding on the tins. Of course, we chase down stolen artwork hidden somewhere in the Pyrenees, which of course are guarded by an undead Nazi soldier. Hilarity ensues. Well, not really.

It was surprisingly good… until the end. Damn, why do they do that?? No, leaving things ambiguous is not a “twist” ending.

Oh, and Zombie 101: go for the head shot. Whether we’re talking Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers, even John Kirby (“Silent Rage”) they would’ve been dead like 100× over if people would’ve just gone for the head shot. Doesn’t matter if they can regenerate fast, unless they can actually regrow a head, they’ll still come back and kill you at their leisure.

And if a little hole doesn’t seem like much, a big hefty rock or tree-branch to spatter the ol’ melon into a pile of goo, that should do ’em in. 5-6 shots to the chest means the baddie will only be back, and quite cross with you, and likely kill you in a more horrific way than otherwise planned.

Or decapitation. Even if the body itself reanimates, it won’t have eyes to see you, ears to hear you, or even a nose to smell you. It’ll just walk around aimlessly and bonk into trees. And that’s assuming it could even walk at all, what with no inner-ears to have any sense of balance.

Sheesh…

Oh, and exploring dark eerie Nazi caves… bring flashlights that work. A couple of multi-D Mags and big bulky spotlights won’t cut it, especially if one stops working right off. :person_facepalming: E-x-p-l-o-r-i-n-g, as in dark dungeony places, where you’ll need light. C’mon, people…

Okay, pretty good movie (except for the ending), but the characters kinda pist me off.

Next, “Psych 2: Lassie Come HomeReally nice seeing the band together again. Didn’t quite have the same magic as the earliest seasons of the series, but it was still pretty good.

Complaints? Families. Marriage. Even dating. Damn, I hate when serieses do that. “Moonlighting” was awesome ’til they started seeing each other. “Bones”, same dealy, awesome ’til they brought in the kids and the relationships and all that rot. Hey writers! If you got a great series, don’t piss in the pool. Do not let them hook-up, or get married. Do not bring in the kids that are only hinted at in passing dialogue. If they start dating, break ’em up shortly after, or better yet, don’t let them start dating at all. Writing goes to $#|+, and so does the series.

Everyone in P2 was now part of a couple, and a lot of the movie was wasted with one or more of them trying to find or avoid the other half. And there was just too much needless “padding” in the movie. So without all the fluff, the hournahalf movie could’ve been cut down to a single episode.

So it was a good movie, in the sense that a starving man would relish even a dry stale cookie. Objectively, just like the later seasons of the series, it lost its way from how it all started.

So, a coupla near-misses tonight.

Yes. It’s loosely based on the novel “Roadside Picnic,” by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. Andrei Tarkovsky made a movie more closely based on the novel, “Stalker” (1979).

I’ve read the novel and seen both of the movies. Stalker is very low budget, but creative in a quiet way. It unfolds at a pace and contains dialog that test the patience of today’s typical movie viewer in the USA, but I think it’s very well done. Annihilation is a very different movie (more action, more effects), and I liked that one, too, to some degree. The novel was the best, in my opinion.

I saw it, and I think I liked it.

Sounds intriguing. I actually enjoy slower paced & more thoughtful movies so I may give Stalker a shot then follow with Annihilation.

Good to hear it. Natalie Portman usually gives amazing performances (exception was Star Wars 2 & 3, but the writing stank though).

Watched Oblivion again for the 3rd time. One time wasn’t enough—had to revisit to catch some things I didn’t quite get the first time (which was just a few years after the 2013 release date). The 3rd has been more of an “observer” run, to spend time noticing things that would be missed as you’re focused on the main action. A lot of imaginative craft & attention to detail went into making this movie. I have to wonder if the SFX guy who did the touch screens worked on the WestWorld series. While there are some notable flaws, I just love the aesthetics of it & the pace. And it’s always great to hear Morgan Freeman’s voice.

Btw, there is a “Part II” movie coming, but it’ll be a prequel.

OT, someone went to the trouble of creating a full textured 3D model of the bubble ship from Oblivion. He gave it to a programmer who was able to code it to become an add-on to Grand Theft Auto V. Here’s a demo:

Freedom Writers (2007)
