Is Nitecore wrong on this ?
No, that seems to be right to me. There's a basic explanation of different tints here.
I figured I'd make a guide related to XM-Ls and tint, binning, CRI, and all the other details I can think of. Tint There are 3 basic tints. Cool White is a very pure white and is what most lights are. This generally has a low CRI (color rendition index) and will not show colors that well. Some people say that it is to blue. It is generally around 6000k. Neutral White is considered to be one of the better tints as it still seems fairly white, but does have a higher CRI. It …
Cool white, as in true white looks perfect to me. The beam color on my L3 K40, and G5 Malestrom, are perfect to my eyes and render color in a very natural manner. My quark X 2AA is very yellowish, and while I like the light a lot, it makes colors look unnatural. The Stanley HID is very blue and unnatural . If true cool white is pure white and neutral white is more yellow, then I believe I would prefer cool white. If I could see them both in person I might change my mind.

bh, I agree with you for inside use but when outside NW or even WW are great due to the higher CRI.
That’s what I love about my K40. I consider it to be true white, making the color rendition wonderful. Look at the natural color of the corn stalks with the K40 compared to the sterile blue of the HID. When I here cool white led, I think more in terms of the older ones with a more fluorescent blueish looking tint, similar to the Stanley.
