Why would a box be easier?
A plunger hold with thumb on switch has weight behind and in front of the hand a box has all the weight in front of hand
Side carry, arm down:
So a plunger will only need one to loosen the pinky or index finger for up and down, box needs constant strength to point forward or a bit up, plunger is easier
Shoulder carry, a plunger can be carried on the shoulder (ideal for reflections and have the beam go over anything lower then yoir shoulders. (I use all my lights like this when inspecting the grounds, ideal)
Again balanced because of the cell weight
A box maybe could be carried like this but again needs constant force to keep straight, so plunger is easier.
I think you’ve added something both interesting AND smart here. Yes I agree that using an older LED feels like going backwards, and surely any manufaturer would make something modern!
The Courui is too small for 120mm reflector. A new body is required. Or if you are talking about just internals mod then the main problem of the courui is the awkward driver, and electronic switch. If it had tail switch with normal switch, and a normal driver - believe me - it would sell at least 10 times better. I know I would buy one! The driver is not even the main problem, I would even direct drive it, but it needs to be drilled, it needs a switch to be added and it is just plain too much work. As in not the work itself, but will it look nice at the end? 50/50 chance, and people dont want to have chopped stuff in hands. The Courui is perfect small thrower but it is really a letdown for modding.
In the end it’s not really that important what the light will look like, as long as we can come to a decision and move along.
Now this has been started lots of people are getting quite impatient………(yes, I was talking about myself….)
Oh but patience is once more key, even more then the Q8 since that is a known format and the interest list grew and grows so fast it was clear that manufacturer would not Have a big risk, just very little profit to start with yet a nice addition to line up.
Nobody voted today so I think tomorrow when west side of the world has put in some lumens it should be clear
I do not see what the point is? The XHP leds are different from XP-L and other leds, bigger and multiple dies, but not necessarily more advanced or a replacement for the smaller leds.
In that reasoning, maybe using the XHP leds is going backwards because since the XP-L2 and XP-G3 they are ‘older’ leds.
+1 w/djozz. XHP's are basically old LED's re-bundled, re-packaged, but of course with some advantages with compactness. The XHP35 HI is something unique, but the 12V requirement has to be worked with. The XP-G3 and XP-L2's are something new, but seem to have some issues, can't be de-domed with a method we all know, don't have noticeable increase in brightness bins, and don't seem to be better at throw. Only promising attributes I see so far are a lower Vf.
What have i missed? The point of a thrower isn’t maximum power? If you just want this light to be a niche go with a XHP series LED If you want a light you can actually use and carry while out and about go with a single die LED.
I guess now days you can use a XHP50/70 with a single cell and get decent run times. has any one ever made a XHP-50 thrower?
Otherwise if i wanted to use a XHP-35 it would be easier to go with a Direct drive XPL you would get the same Lux reading as a XHP-35 almost as much light no reason why the XPL can not do 1700 lumens?
You can De-dome the XPG3 just have to leave the mushy phosphorus layer on. I have been playing with a few XPG3 its possible but i am not sure how to get the layer to stay in place. I have heard lacquer works? This is above my pay grade lol. Maybe Djozz knows more then me? Have you tried to De-dome a XPG3?
I did get a bunch of XP-G3's in but haven't experimented w/dedoming. Arrow has really good prices on them, plus free shipping. How did you do the dedome? Were you able to test throw? Thought they didn't do too well. Guess if you treat it with something, that would lose some throw, like LED Seal does.
