Here’s the next led in the series that Cree is upgrading to a worse beam profile. Ok, I’m being pessimistic, the press release even says:
“In addition to light output and efficacy enhancements, the XHP50.2 LED provides improvements to optical uniformity through secondary optics, enabling spot and portable lighting manufacturers to deliver better lighting experiences.”
Let’s be optimistic then: if we are extremely lucky, the black cross between the led dies is reduced, reducing the donut-hole caused by smooth reflectors.
At least the output is 7% higher and efficiency 10% better, the Vf is a bit lower and the voltage-drop when heating up is lower.

Thanks for sharing, djozz. I need to come up with a way of clearly understanding all these emitters in detail, there are so many these days.
Will it still display the donut hole?
Oh boy! I just hit 1000 posts.
Not quite ready for a giveaway, but I will get around to it eventually:)
With the rough phosfor, it may have a less clear cross in between the leds, so who knows the donut hole will be less pronounced

Hmm, I guess that just leaves the XHP70 to be updated then.

I kinda feel that either you go with the larger more powerful XHP70, or the smaller XHP35 or XPL. XHP50 doesn’t seem too popular…
For New Thrower!!!
XHP50.2 Hi
XHP70.2 Hi
Which is weird, because it can be used to upgrade an XML2 light with the 5*5mm dimensions…
Just find a way to push 6V through it, and you’re good.
BTW I’ve still to find a good high CRI XHP50 in the 4000Kish

I would definitely like something with even more lumens than an XHP70
The CBT140 from luminus is too inefficient.

No doubt it’s discussed somewhere, but I want to see HI versions of XHP70 and 50.
I’m not sure how well a dome-less emitter goes together with the new type of rough phosfor, you may not have the same die luminance (=throw) upgrade that the XP-L Hi has over the XP-L.

looks like the phosphor is a continuous blanket completely covering the quad die. I would expect no black cross, but probably back to the evil tint shift we had just started to get away from.

I more expect the same as the Nichia 144A, with the cross reduced, and yellow:

Mount it on a gun: you have illumination AND a crosshair.
hmm good pic Djozz, guess I’ll have to wait and see.

It seems the all of the 5050 footprint LEDs have gone out of fashion.
Made me chuckle
Edit: Maybe they come with windage and elevation adjustments?
Not quite, there is the new Luminus SST-40, essentially a clone of the XM-L2.

This looks interesting… I hope they are not only optimized for optics use.
The new Olight s10R III uses it, efficiency is about the same or maybe a tad higher than the XM-L2 judging by the amp draw but there is massive tint shift betweeen hotspot and spill. (Very cool tint at the edge)
USB power meter/tester thread
Use tintshift for elevation adjustment.
I’d rather see them produce a 6V only version using the same process as the MTG-2 or XPG-3 foregoing the 12V option in favor of a clean beam. I for one appreciate the XM footprint since I mostly work with small to medium size hosts.

Thanks mate!
I think this is better for general use. Dedoming will be no good any more.

The normal XHP50 could be dedomed easily? Last I heard all the XHP series was a royal pain to dedome and thats why most sliced the done.

Any one else notice the OP dome.
And that the dome seems to have phosphor mixed into it.

Nothing to see here folks, move along...
Anybody seen these for sale yet? I have a light ready for one of these, just waiting for them to come to market. I want to test it and see how it compares to the old XHP50 and XHP70.

Yes on Kaidomain.com.
Thanks for the heads up!
Wow, they are more expensive then I had hoped / figured they would be.
At least they have some good tints, too bad they are not high CRI as well. I have a sale pending, I might grab one after that although not sure I will want to risk it by running a test on it since I have a light I want to use it in.
