I think the amount of diffusion from the lens is determined by it’s distance from the emitter (distance from the emitter to the reflector then to the lens).
When I put the MT lens into an S2 with a smooth reflector, I don’t think there is as much improvement as when I install them in a p60 or C8. I really don’t have a way to measure the improvement to the beam.
My goal for the MT lens is to noticeably improve the beam pattern without affecting the throw. I also think too much diffusion would be worse than too little diffusion.
I should have all of the custom sizes in tomorrow and I will get them mailed out on Friday.
Your goal is correct. My intention was to clean up the beam on somewhat poorly designed op reflectors. While there might be a slight improvement, it’s barely notifiable in my intended application. My first lenses just arrived after I ordered a bunch of customs. Oh well. Seems like a nice high performance lens. Just doesn’t fix what I was hoping. I’m assuming these are polymer? What kind? How durable? Scratch resistance?
Got my Pineapple lens in today so I thought I’d do a quick comparison. Hope it helps.
First, a beamshot with the original lens:
And one with the microtexture:
May be hard to tell the difference between them like this, so here’s a gif’ified comparison:
Photos never tell the whole story on something like this, and honestly I didn’t exactly put a lot of effort into keeping all other factors equal between shots, so consider these photos just as a simple representation of the results. They don’t tell the whole story.
In short, I’m happy with the results. Its not a miracle problem-solver, there’s still some of that worst ring left, but overall much of the smaller irregularities are gone and the beam is quite a bit smoother all around, with no noticeable reduction in output. Nice!
I received my lenses today and I am 100% happy with the results. In my P60 hosts, they made the spot and spill more uniform, even on OP reflectors, and allowed measurably more light out the front.
Thank you.
Just dropped one of these lenses in my Olight S10R Baton III with the SST-40. It had a horrible center artifact due to the LED and reflector design… It is now gone!!!
Hey will, can i ask why you didn’t go for the tir version instead?
To op, could this be used as somekind of difuser. I’m thinking of using high cri nichia for lightning in of-grid situation. But still looking for somekind of nice looking fifusion
Anybody know if these still exist anywhere? Randy hasn’t logged on here for nearly a year and his site is still down quoting a large contract order consuming resources. Very interested in a lens like this if anybody has any pointers I’d appreciate it!
I use simple diffuser cut out to the size from Gerber printer vinyl, normally used for labels and placards in aviation (withstands 135 deg. C and has some flame resistance).
Similar materials are used for backlit posters, bus stop advertisements etc.
Vinyl is 10 mils thick (0,25 mm), frosty on one side and clear and smooth on the other. It’s very hard to scratch and protects glass on the flashlight well as an extra bonus.
It’s probably quite ineffective and blocks some light, but I don’t mind, I like smooth beam and don’t care about some lost percent of light.
