Our left leaning Governor is VERY limiting (and the legislature too).

I only hope they don’t decide to add the D4 to the long list of fun things we aren’t allowed to own, citing how it could be dangerous in the hands of a criminal or inconsiderate idiot…

It could always be worse, you could have a mayor that insists that no matter what the governor nor FEMA nor NWS says about evacuating in front of a massive and slow moving hurricane, that you stay home and off the roads. I guess it’s safer to have to swim to higher ground (if your not disabled)(and you can swim) and wait someone else to evacuate you. There are a lot of hungry, thirsty, sand wet folks in Houston, but I doubt the mayor is.

I haven’t really kept up with this huge discussion, so if this is already well known information then I apologize for the double, but if you’re still looking for a clip option for this light check out this Overready. Yeah it may be a bit silly to put a $25 clip on a $40 light, but I think the D4 is worth it Smile I did have to dremel it out just a bit inside; its slightly too narrow from the box, not too hard though. Also a spacer is required inside so the tailcap contacts the battery tube. A paperclip works well, if you don’t want to get too fancy with it. I’m sure there’s other ‘universal’ ~1” clips out there that would work too. I personally like this a lot better than a friction-fit clip.

Could you possibly measure from the bottom flat to the end of that first cut-out? I’d like to know if I could chop it down to fit the short tube D4… Smile

Edit: Looking for 0.82” or 20.9mm, can it do that?

Hmm, it may be a good idea if Hank looks at this picture, that clip looks very very good on the D4 Cool
As for the paperclip: I have an assortment of brass washers, with a hot solder iron you can solder a fitting one onto the tail PCB for a bit permanent solution of the shortened tail threading.

Yes it does, but USD 25:- for a clip is highway robbery.

Not exactly sure which measurement you’re looking for so let’s just do it this way. If this doesn’t answer your question just let me know and we’ll try something else Smile

I’ve got a roll of thick copper sheeting that I’ve used for various spacers and things before. If I wind up using this light as much as I expect to I’ll probably pull the tail apart and build the grounding ring up using some cut copper. The paperclip is doing the job right now though. Smile

No argument from me. But I guess I find them worth it because I’ve put these clips on lots of lights. I mean at least they’re steel now. Back when they were made of titanium they cost twice this much Big Smile

So, anyone know where to find the information on heat-cycling li-ion cells?

Let’s see … ‘oogle … ‘oogle …. aaah:

Quote:
Temperature is known to have a significant impact on the performance, safety, and cycle lifetime of lithium-ion batteries (LiB)….the effects on the aging behavior of cycled LiB operating within the temperature range of 25 °C to 55 °C. The increasing degradation rate of the maximum charge storage of LiB during cycling at elevated temperature is found to relate mainly to the degradations at the electrodes

https://www.nature.com/articles/srep12967

Does anyone make a primary (disposable, non-rechargeable) cell in the 18650 size?

I tell ya, we’re in the process of reinventing the flashbulb here.

I’d like to see these super-bright emitters built to use separate from the battery carriers — bolt the bright/hot part instead onto a big handheld heatsink, and connect that to a belt-pack power supply with a big copper cable. Then we could wave around the brightest possible light source without killing attached batteries by heat cycling.

Regarding the clip. Someone mentioned the Solarforce clip works as well. May need to be reamed (I’m not sure). But, that one is $4.50.

I’m personally going to make an order for that one right now and give it a try.

Thank you. And yes, that does indeed answer the question. It could be made to work on the short tube…

I have a piece of sheet Titanium and may try my hand at making a clip, need one for a pocket knife as well, so…

Yes, D1 and D4 tubes are interchangable, meaning D1 can also use the 18350 tube to become a tiny thrower.
D1 around 40Kcd, 1*XP-L HI, ultra small body, slightly bigger than D4 as it can be seen above, true all arounder for size and throw
D4 around 120Kcd,1*XP-L HI, excellent throw, small body

D7 is using 7*LED and 3*18650

Same UI on all D series from Emisar

There has been a few comments regarding the D4 UI…
Will there be an updated version on future lights – D1, D7…?

Fasttech has the Solarforce clip for $5.20.
I’ve seen it for anything from $6 to $20 for sale elsewhere.

Solarforce used to make a nice deep carry clip but I haven’t seen that for a few years.
A guy was going to make something similar, but he disappeared: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?381284-Copperhead-Dee...

Unfortunately it looks like FastTech stock on the solarforce clip is discontinued.

I don’t think it would be a good idea.
The UI has a lot of things that you can make, and if you have 3 light with all different modes, you will get confused a lot.

I would love if the driver from the D4 would be free to buy…
That UI on a 12*XP-G2 King or so…

Updates should be done and a system/service put in place to update the drivers on previous lights if desired. I have about 35 flashlights with different UIs at home. We can handle an updated UI. Smile

I don’t have a problem with different UIs, but if UIs are 95% similar, you will get confused about which UI you have right now.
Also, I think the UI is really good. Most of the time you just need the ramping or the double-click 100% mode.

I love the UI, but would happily invite any updates.

Progress and updates go hand in hand.

Progress is welcome in my collection. It’s highly anticipated as a matter of fact.

You go TK!

share your secret – what do you have, a filing system? With 100+ lights, I’m lost in a sea of UIs. Lights like the Nitecore EC11 are especially troublesome to remember Silly

Yeah, been getting rid of a lot of lights. Picking out the most useful and getting rid of the Queens and anything that sits unused for more than a few months. Yeah, I have the Nitecore EC11 modified with a 4000k emitter. Selling that one too. Cool little light though!

Thanks for the data CRX!

here is another ~1000 lumen light, and its runtime graph Both the D4 and the PT-18 have similar runtime, once you factor the different mAh of each battery, ~1200 for the 18350 in the D4 and ~2600 for the 18650 in the PT-18

What is it Hank..??

It looks like Hank is almost ready to release the D1.

From what I can tell, the Emisar D series has (or will have) the following lights:

  • D4: ~12 kcd / ~3800 lm ~4 cd / lm (pocket rocket flooder)
  • D1: ~40 kcd / ~1500 lm, ~26 cd / lm (general-purpose throwy light)
  • D1S: ~120 kcd / ~1500 lm, ~80 cd / lm (compact dedicated thrower, like a better C8)
  • D7: ~84 kcd(?) / ~7000 lm, ~12 kcd(?) (soda can light)

Now, only the D4 has actual specs so far… the rest are guesses.

I think the D1 and D4 will probably be the most practical general-purpose lights in the series, one as a flooder and one as a compact throwy light, but I’d really like to see something in-between — something D4-sized with a reflector and perhaps 10 to 15 cd / lm.

And deep-carry clips for the D4, D1, and D1S… including one which fits the 18350 size. These lights really need clips.

UI and drivers evolution as a whole is one of the things that keeps this forum ticking. You can’t really argue against it.

Now i understand a manufacturer would want to have a one line of lights with the same UI for consistency… This is somewhat a hard choice to make when things are moving fast and you want to stay on the cutting edge. Even Simon at Convoy has started to replace the half a decade old 3/5 modes drivers with a new one running Biscoti on the S (and C?) line.

The main issue i have with the actual V2 UI on the D4 is that the default single click is unpredictable. It can be anything between moon and turbo regardless of the last level you ramped to. A single burst of turbo with a double click from off will reset the last used level to max – which will probably come as a surprise the next time you turn on the light. As i understand the Q8, GT and FW3A will not behave like that…

This is a great idea. I love the size of the D4 with an 18350 tube but it sucks the cells dry in very little time. A single emitter in the same size would be much more practical and I’d finally have a good use for my 18350 cells.

Clips would be wonderful as well. The Convoy on my D4 with the longer tube works but isn’t elegant to say the least.

As far as I’m aware, they’ll have the D4 v2 UI. However, I’d be willing to update it if Hank is interested. I sent him a message about it yesterday. I’m not sure he wants to make it all fancy like what I like, but I could still fix a few little things at least.

I’ve also had some ideas for improving thermal regulation, but I haven’t tried them yet. I should probably do that soon. Mostly I’ve been playing with the new UI toolkit I made.

I’m also hoping the D7 is reasonably priced. Something in the $75 range would be amazing (and possibly asking too much) but the D4 (and now D1) are perched at a really wonderful price point and are selling like hotcakes (pun intended!).

I would be interested in a second D4 for me, if there were any of the small improvements in the interface, which you commented in previous post. I would like above all: that the Turbo or tactical mode could be limited to lower values (60 or 70%).
