Thanks I’m glad to hear these are the same quality as my other Ganzos.
I’ve been considering the G7291-BK, (black one with CNC machined grooves in the G10 - second from left in the photo) I have several Spyderco PM 2 clones with compression lock that I love, but the AXIS lock is what really draws me in to these. I use the Spyder Drop opening method.
I do love my G727M (Ontario RAT style) Never thought I’d see a G10 RAT with AXIS lock! As you said about the G729 it’s sharp and perfectly centered, plus super solid lock up with zero blade play. I also have a G719 auto, also absolutely zero blade play, a true work of art that one is.
How’s the blade grind on the Ganzo compared to your Spyderco?
MY impression is that the more expensive the knives become the finer and thinner are the blade grinds which I prefer.
Sadly my G7533-CF was a lemon, the blade is dulling pretty fast, worse than any other Ganzo I tried.
timo5150, does your G729 have full steel liners or skeletonized ? Also if you don’t mind saying where did you purchase it from? $15 delivered is a great price!
Yes it has full steel liners and I got it from Gearbest. They had a flash sale a week or two ago when I bought the ones for my son in-laws but I think I paid like 17 when I bought mine.
I haven’t sharpened my wife’s Spyderco yet but I think they are around 17 degrees. I just put the Ganzo on my KME sharpener and it looks to be about 20 degrees. With the cheaper steels its easy to change the angle though.
Yeah guess I better hurry up and get mine. I’d like to find one with the Skeletonized liners though.
I wonder if they were ordered to cease and desist production by Spyderco.
The knives I’ve purchased from GearBest have all been inspected by Border Force which caused a delay, but they’ve all come through. As long as they’re not prohibited (e.g. assisted) you shouldn’t have a problem.
GearBest seems to describe some knives as assisted even though they aren’t, especially if they have a ball bearing pivot.
Out of curiosity has anyone tried the extremely cheap Dollar Tree sharpening stone? I just picked one up to mess with on some very cheap junk knives that I have. Currently my sharpening method depending on the state of the edge is choose a sandpaper grit, lay it on top of a mouse pad then pull at a slight angle keeping the edge perpendicular to the direction I’m pulling. I managed to get a knife that was dull to quite usable using this method, but it took some time. I’s like to try out one of those sharpmakers eventually. Thanks for the alternative skinny_tie! The Spyderco costs more than my entire knife collection currently so I’m always interested in budget sharpening methods.
I sharpen my knives when they got dull a bit, usually with a steeper angle than the original one.
But I meant the blade thickness behind the actual cutting edge. Usually cheap knives tend to be quite thick, often with a thick blade stock because it’s “cool” to many people.
This way you get a sharpened prybar instead of a slicer like the usual Spydercos. These blade are or for outdoor use but I like to cut an apple instead of prying it
Does anyone know where the upgraded version of this (with skeletonized liners) can be purchased (G7291-BK, black one with CNC machined grooves in the G10 - second from left in the photo)
According to Steel Reviews (isti242’s Blog) At some point this model were upgraded with skeletonized liners and are now a bit lighter weight:
I’m not sure if the skeletonized liner upgrade included G7291 model with CNC grooves. I did see on a review the Ganzo Firebird F729 (Carbon Fiber version) and it did have the skeletonized liners. Chinese Knives: Review Ganzo-Firebird F729
Also does anyone know if these models have been discontinued by Ganzo?
