I apologize fot he dust in pictures. The camera picks what i cannot see easily.
I liked the 801 more than the 802. The 802 looks very rough, very plumbing style which i don't like much. Im more toward minimalistic design or very elegant lines. I like also the agressive approach but often they do exaggerate. The famous Skyray p60 host is one of those fancy space designs i do like.
The estward J something XM-L based from DX Don revieved in the last days is currently one of my aesthetically favorite designs. Top 5 for sure.
J06. It is a pretty light. I'll need to get outdoors to somewhere with a longer line of sight to do some testing. I'm really impressed with Kokopelli's beamshots on the XM-L shootout thread and would like to try to do some like that with my lights. Time to travel this weekend to somewhere with plenty of quality darkness.
Pardon my ignorance, but does that mean it’s single mode only now?
I have an HS-802, which I believe is pretty much identical. From what I’ve seen, the low mode via the transistor is very inefficient. I really want at least 2 modes, and would like to improve runtime on low mode, so am wondering what the easiest option is for a noob to achieve that?
TIA

Only a driver swap can do it efficiently. Use the AK-47 from kd and disable unwanted modes. In the diy section is the driver reviewed. Cant really help much atm since im typing this from a phone. :)
Had been considering a driver swap to a 1400mA driver. Though from a review by the infamous old4570 ;) had seen that a driver swap may not improve the performance (in terms of throw/high) by a significant amount. My unknown quality DMM (and skills!) have measured ~1.17A on a not fully fresh battery, and so I'm loathe to decrease the max current as the AK-47 has a regulated high of 1050mA, which the tests by brted bear out.
Seems like 1400mA drivers are rare as hens teeth unless you buy in bulk??? :(. I don't want/need 20, and the ones I had bookmarked previously are all 'not found'.
Anyways, as a noob, I guess driver replacement is a bit more than I'm game to go for at the moment without significant benefits on 'high'. Easier for a noob like me to buy some additional 18650s than consider driver replacement...
Hey! Stop laughing at me! And yes I have ordered a P60!! :P
Well i buy the 1050mA ones single mode in 5 pack and if need be i can cannibalize one for additional AMC7135 to make up to 1400mA.
The HS-801 is definitely single mode by driver. The tailcap switch resistor nonsense make it 2 mode. Don't know why would you want to have it 2 mode but hey, who em i to tell you what to do. However for close range a nice P60 XM-L based is more reasonable. I never found use for a dimmer mode on a purely thrower flashlight also a forward switch is also my preference for a single mode flashlight but those are hard to find.
another torch thats good for throwing that get over looked is the TR-1200 the tinny emmiters smaller then a match head in the narrow reflectors does 300 meters and puts out good spill well mine does and the 5 emiters pack a punch.
The Jetbeam BC40 is a good thrower for an XM-l and its a two mode no silly strobe or flashy modes but it might not be classed as a budget light by some, but it is well built easly to use and comes with spare parts and a holster with a nice tint.
you would think the TR-1200 would throw simular to my TR-3T6 but it does not the TR-1200 out throws it 3 fold but the TR-3T6 is 3 times brighter and it just a wall of light it has to be one of my favourt torches, i wish Manafont sold the TR-1200 so i could truley recomend it.
I was going to give it a break on throwers for a while now I've ordered those two but Summer/DD has come up with a special on the Palight T6 (57mm head, regulated) that is too good to miss. So I'll be ordering that too once he gives the link/ordering method.
