Hi guys I need help to mount my light on a MTB. I sometimes ride at night in the woods and am looking for a mount that can fit my K40M. I do not have any other flooder as all my other lights are throwers I mount my Convoy L4, SolarForce M3 and a SWM C22C as auxiliary lights.
Update 31 may
Well I didnt ride last night but I did went to a place to get some beamshots of the convoy L4, K40M, WL-S4, PD12,EA11.
Photos are set with exposure mostly at 10s. Trying to get as similar to what I can see for you guys to get an idea. It was a full moon last night btw.
I was using a shitty camera so maybe the photos weren’t justified haha please forgive me if there’s any errors. I’m using a Panasonic DMC-LZ10.
Control shot
Trees are about 60-70m away from me.
First the K40M on level 6
Convoy L4 on high
Sunwayman C22C
Jetbeam WL-S4(note the larger hotspot as compared to the K40M)
EA11 on turbo(AW IMR 14500)
PD12 on high(KeepPower 16340 800mAh)
These are shots which i played around with the exposure settings.
Finally received the extender. Now I need to figure out how to mount it and start on the project of the Niwalker. Maybe end of next month I’ll start ordering parts
That’s a heavy light for the handlebars. All I can suggest is what people never seem to do .Mount the torch underslung , under the bars and not on top.On top,it wants to slip round, whilst underneath,it wants to stay put.It has a tailswitch,so access is no problem.
The Fenix ALB10 has a good reputation but is only designed for a body of 26mm,not the 49mm of the K40M,but maybe it could be adapted.
One member here, perhaps Gerrybunk, was using pipe supports(plumbing)with some success, but I can not remember which thread.
I use the Fenix ALB-10 mount and I recall it can go as high as 32mm diameter. Longer screws would help but I never measured the distance between the screws whether it’d be enough for 49mm. I can do that tonight.
But for a bar light you typically don’t want long throw, a floody beam is more useful to see what you’re about to run over (like animals or trail). The helmet light is more suited for throw (where you’re looking).
I have my bar light (Eagle Eye X6 triple XP-L) diffused for 180* dispersion so I can see directly under my front tire. The helmet light for the faster downhills to see further ahead.
A small tube light velcro’ed to the helmet can provide plenty of throw. I’ve tried several and they all work well, the Eagle Eye X6 BLF provides plenty of throw. I plan to try it w/ the A6 or the S2+ (once I get them) but that will prob have to wait til winter to nite ride again.
I just looked up the K40M, not knowing what it is. That is a serious chunk of weight, I don’t think I’d trust the Fenix mount for that much weight if your trail is not smooth and you’re bombing down rough trails.
I’ve found that during the climbs when it’s slow going, I have the bar light at around 500 lumens mode and helmet is either powered off or also at low modes to conserve battery. For slightly faster sections then I bump them up accordingly depends on the trails but rarely need max input. For the long fast downhills, then I crank it up. My rides are typically 90’ long and I’ve never had to swap batteries.
Hahhahah I see. Though on the two occasions that I did brought the K40M with me, it didn’t die on me. Most of my rides lasts 3h max. I used black tape to secure it onto the handle bar It did shake alot and that’s why I’m looking for a mount. Other than that, I do not have a dedicated flooded .The only flooded I have is the K40M and maybe the C22C I really do want to get myself a triple xxpg but I haven’t got the skills yet
I’ve tried a few on the bar and just about anything w/ DC Fix will make it super 180* floody.
The $8 Zeusray is quite floody but only 90* w/out diffusion film. DCFix will cut throw significantly
but the dispersion is great for the bar.
For throw, the K40M is a bit heavy to mount on the helmet :-).
I could pay someone who is kind enough to help machine for me a custom tripod mount for the light? Just an outer casing to hold the light in and a screw hole for a tripod? That way i can use it anywhere! ;p
