Wich Maglite 2D/3D Led version?

Hello,
I’m reading to buy this Maglite D cell Led(I’m a beginner)
I have this model for about 20 euro shipped
And think this is the older Mag version(year?)

This Another relase (2009?)

and declared 114 lumens 9.15 hours runtime

And the new

declared 133 lumens 8 hours runtimes

I request info about lumen and runtime of the older Mag Led
on the older is possible change bulb and led,
in the new is possible change led with a spare?
It’s a good idea buy the older 2d Led Mag?
finally the 3d Mag offer very much runtime(how)?
thanks for help

Hi, Alen and welcome to BLF! I would wait a bit. There's a new MAG in town....

They “switched” from XP-E to XP-G?

Apparently; about freakin' time!

But I can't find it in any specs. Lots of reading to do.

LOL…can’t wait til next BF to pick some up 1/2 price…

As long as it's been taking for new models of Mags to hit retail, Streamer, that's probably about right....

Hi
yes I Have look the new Maglite, interesting
but as the older models Led is impossible to change?
and there is always the same problem of the shade on the center?
I ask because in my country aren’t available and can’t try
thanks

Alan, the top one you show is the old Incan version and it has been modded hundreds of times, probably one of the all time favorite models for that. I've never had the 114 lumen LED model, but the bottom 133 lumen version can be found at retail all over the U.S., typically @ ~$30.00. Right now they are on sale before Christmas for about 1/2 that price. There are LED upgrade kits available for most Incan Maglites, but it is often cheaper just to buy a new light.

Here you can see the whole line up of Maglites: http://www.maglite.com/productline.asp

Alen, The reason the 3D Mag runs for 80 hours is because of the driver in the light. The 3D Mag will run just as bright on 2D cells because of the driver. In effect the 3D will still run with 3 very run down D cells, all the while running at full brightness. A very good reason to consider it over the 2D version.

Thanks to all for the support
I have looked that Mag have a black hole at the center,
I don’t like much this feature,
do you know alternative to Maglite?
with asperichal lens maybe?

Howdy, Alen! What "black hole" are you speaking of? All Mags have adjustable heads so you can adjust the beam for different distances. Is it possible that you simply saw a mag beam that wasn't adjusted properly (by a simple twist of the head) for the distance to the object it was shining on?

might be off topic but why is the 3D maglite rated 3 lumens less than the 2D?

Probably for the same reason that some of their C cell incandescents are rated a lumen or two more than corresponding D cell lights.

I believe it’s due to the 2D using a boost driver and the 3D a buck driver. They attain similar output, but the 3D has much longer runtime.

Today I noticed my rarely used 3D LED Maglite had a large black hole in the middle of the hotspot. I’m glad I found this post as I was able to adjust the head (duh! :Sp ) and open/close up the beam. Thanks for the tip!

The BIG issue here is that much of the time, you might not want a tight, throwy beam. It is when you adjust your focus for a floodier beam that you run into the donut hole problem. This can be alleviated to some degree with an orange peel or stipled reflector. But, while such reflectors are available in abundance for incandescent Mags (and LED conversions of incan mags like Malkoff), I don’t know that they are available for the LED Mags.

The Mag focusing isn’t really a flood to throw function, it is really a focus. This means you can optimise it for long distance with a really tight beam, but if you shine it at something closer up you might get the donut hole. The focus allows you to remove this.

Most fixed focus lights are a compromise and won’t have the tightest beam because they too would get donut holes when shone at something closer. It’s largely this reason that Mags can be made such good throwers for their moderate head size.

If you really need lots of flood, just take the head off completely.
