Retro 2D light

This is what I found on a dollar-store.
It is same as lights I saw when I was a child.

DX have just started doing a similar one but a 2AA version.

I have the exact same one. Got it at a pawn shop. The textured reflector is very nice. Mine casts a surprisingly smooth beam. Yes, it’s like 10 lumens, tops…but at least it’s nice light. I also keep it around to see what once was acceptably bright every so often. Kind of fun.

What does that red bulb do?

Momentary switch?

I really want to throw a nw xm-l in one of these on two 32600 cells….

Yep, it’s a momentary switch. The toggle is 3-position: lock-out, momentary only, constant on.

Yes it is a momentary switch works only the toggle is in medium position.

I have just put 2 9000mah GP batteries inside. I haven’t tested the run time but sure it will be long.
it is not a lumens monster, even 1-2 5mm led flashlight can produce more lumens.

I never really cared for those stamped tin torches. I had one when I was little, and as kids do, they tend to break things. Consequently, I broke that torch… didn’t take long. After a couple of drops, the end caps with the pressed-in threads were so mangled you could barely twist it open, and the glass lens was shattered, not to mention it was constantly flickering. And the chromed sheetmetal started to rust after the first night you left it out in the sandbox or in the garden.

My parents had a similar one, with the exceptions of the tube made from aluminium, and the end cap and head made from hard rubber. That light (focusing, even!) would withstand a drop from two feet easily, but of course, I was not allowed to play with it. I remember it used a cell I have never seen again since the early 80’s, about the size of a 26850, just longer and a bit wider. Probably some offbeat carbon-zinc design, I forgot.

Yes, definitely not a rugged design (the metal probably dents really easily). I do like the aesthetics of these torches though, and I was surprised the bulb tower’s design permits a small range of fine-tuning focusing. Funny, I liked your story-sounds like me when I was a kid 0:)

It was my grandfathers touch about 30 years ago.
That was a surprise for me to see this torch between led touches in a store.
in my first visit, I just skipped it. After about 6 months, on my next visit, I saw it again.
I asked for the price, it was $.50, may be because no one wants an old light.
I have just purchased.

I had a few the same/very similar when I lived in Germany(wish I was still there tbh!!), I also had a version that had a large magnet halfway along the body and a plastic lens with a centre spot piece on the lens, had a really good hot spot, not seen that once since though.
I remember the batteries referred to as I too used these in my torches when I lived in Germany, used to tape a torch on my bike as drag from dynamo was knackering, and fed up of getting pulled by the “feds” riding through the town precint in Lubbecke, german cops used to like to see if they could pull your ears off ha ha.
