Noob from Louisiana

thought I'd post a hello.

I mostly dabble in bike lighting, but modded up a 3-cell Mag over the weekend, thought I'd nose around here.

Hello Chris and welcome to BLF ! ! !

This is the right place to be if you’re into modding, enjoy your stay and please share your builds.

Welcome to BLF! You'll love being here! :)

It was making lights for my mtb that got me into flashlight modding!

Enjoy your stay here, there’s never a dull moment.

Welcome! Enjoy your stay!

Welcome to BLF! Modding is half the fun for me. BLF is a great place to learn and share mod knowledge.
Just be aware that being a member of this forum has a thinning effect on your wallet

Welcome to BLF, Adrenalnjunky! Glad you poked your head in. Be sure to pop in regularly. This truly is the friendliest, most helpful forum on the Internet. 8)

So how about some pics of the Mag-Mod? That's how I got my start, by modding a 3-D Mag through various generations of utility. Started as a custom 36 5mm LED shower-head insert, then to a single very old low-bin XR-E emitter, and finally to a XR-E R2 very hard driven behind an aspheric resulting in an extremely focused and intense LASER-like beam, that illuminates out to 3000 feet...

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes.

Which would be the best forum to post a build/mod thread?

Welcome to the BLF !

Having attended Tulane, Louisiana has a special place in my heart...a place stuffed with Beignets and inexpensive liquor.

I have a build thread I could post - just not sure where to put it yet.

Basic details is, stock reflector (cut down), Xm-L2 U2 1C-tint, 3A Dx driver, custom heatsink from jayrob on CPF, running on a pair of Panasonic 3100ma 18650's in series, and a charging jack built into the tailcap.

Beamshot on high - the tree is 167' from the camera (I'm zoomed in a little):

Nice work on the light, I saw the build thread over on MTBR. (http://forums.mtbr.com/lights-diy-do-yourself/not-bike-light-but-my-weekend-project-834793.html)

Thanks, I didn’t know if linking to other forums was frowned upon over here.

I completely meant to beamshot my new helmet light build along with this for comparison. (6x XP-G2s @ 1.5A) Oh well. I can always do it tonight.

Also, I think in your beamshot you may have over exposed it a bit. Brad (ILIKEFLASHLIGHTS) knows a lot about camera settings and he says that when doing ISO 200 and F 4 you want closer to a 2 second shutter rather than a 6 second shutter.

For anyone wondering these are the settings he used.

F/4
6 second exposure
ISO 200
Zoom at 30mm

Yeah - I pulled the settings Troutie had over on the MTBR beamshot thread. They didn’t mention ISO, so I picked something kinda low. I should have focused a little better, but it was cold out.

It's a pleasure to know you, adrenalnjunky!
