In the TK70 Club!

Got my Fenix TK70 Yesterday. Nice to be in the TK70 Club. My first high quality flashlight that’s over 100 dollars. In a way I’m suprized I’m still wow’ed by this light considering I have the J12 & ebay HID. I would put as a floody as my J12, as instense as my X6. One thing is the turbo and high aren’t that different. Or might be my batteries. So I guess 900 lumens to 2200 isn’t that much. I’m running them off 5C batteries right now cuz I dont’ have any 32650 or D size battery on hand. In a way I wished I bought this light instead of the others now. But then again it’s nice to have a company of lights to compare it too. TN31 & Mircofire HID you are next on the list as well as POB HID!

Congrats on the TK70! Mine pretty much poops on everything I own. My friend and I were standing outside the other night messing with my Trustfire X6 with fresh Trustfire flames and the TK70 with fresh Tenergy Centura LSD NiMH D cells. The TK70 is significantly brighter and there is definitely a significant improvement in output in turbo mode. I think you just need some better batteries. My Ultrafire 9xT6 definitely puts out more light, but it cant even begin to touch the throw distance of the TK70.

Congrats! I have the same feeling when I got my Trustfire X100. Thought I should get another TK70 instead of X100. Kind of like a worse thing make the better thing shines, and thinking “I should save the money and get a better one”.

Strange, Turbo and high has big difference with my 4*D NIMH setup.

Guess I need better batteries. On high my tk70 is appoximatly 1/4 that of the ebay HID so I would say whomever said that HID was 4000+ OTF is correct. Makes me want to remember that demo video that took everybody in.

Mine is a bit tinted warm or yellow. But I got some tenergy premium coming and getting some cheap energize D atm.

Are those C cells NiMH? True NiMH C cells (such as Tenergy Premium or Centura) are actually VERY powerful batteries, and would be completely capable of running a TK70 on turbo (albeit with reduced runtime compared to D’s). If you can’t see a difference between high and turbo, then you either have bad cells or are running alkalines

As far as Energizer D batteries, don’t even bother with them. They’re just AA batteries in adaptors. If you are willing to go the AA route, just buy some Duraloops at your local grocery store and put them in D adaptors (available at some electronics stores, like Fry’s).

I’d recommend AccuEvolution 10,000mAh low self discharge NiMHs. They arent too expensive and in fact I can run my TK70 with THREE of them instead of 4 (without extender) with no loss of brightness and Turbo works just fine.

You really want NiMH because alkalines cannot pull near enough current to do Turbo mode successfully. In fact, it may NOT even be GOING to turbo! I think Fenix changed the TK70 such that it wouldnt outright fail in Alkalines maybe by bypassing turbo mode, or doing a half-assed turbo mode. Not sure which.

As stated, low self discharge is really good to ensure your batteries dont lose 15% charge per month, on top of your usage.
And be SURE to read the actual mAh number to ensure you are getting at least 8000+… not those crappy energizers, etc that are rewrapped AAs with their 2000 mAh.

Got some alkaline Ds now. Waiting on my Tenergy Premiums. They do hold turbro for 1-2 seconds or so. That’s good enough and it’s a bit brighter than 5 Cs.

Got mine 2 weeks ago, and I´m very very happy with it. I feel like overkilling when I lite the TK70. It is so overwhelming. I have 2 Trustfire 3XM-Ls, one original and one fake and compared to these bright throwers the TK70 is superior. Now we have lots of snow and the turbo-mode is too bright when walking in the forest. It is blending. Have to wear sunglasses
I did choose the TK70 and not the TK75 while I like the D-size NiMHs. I never got friends with the LiONs.

Upate: Turbro sound still on using Maha Powerex. So I guess it’s completely normal. Really like the TK70. The lux is so much more than my Trustfire X6. It’s over 2X the flood of my Trustfire 3T6. Brighter than man TR-J12. Kinda makes me wish I didn’t buy the others earlier and save for it.

As I already said, the Trustfire 3T6 and the replica are no match. I use Ansmann 10 000 mAh NiMH cells. The longest I have run it on turbo is 45 minutes. It is OK for me while I have 2 sets of cells and can change when they are out.

Haha, many have this kind of feeling. TK70 quality finish will make many rethink about their purchase on lower cost budget light.
I bought a Trustfire X100 after owning TK70 for about one year, when I got my X100, I kind of “regret” that I should save to get another TK70.
Nothing wrong with X100, just relatively TK70 is designed and manufactured too fine and elegant. Though some don’t like her big size.

The considerable drawbacks of the TK70 is its length and weight, but I think if there is one major one, it severely limits the other choices in lights that can out-perform its flood/throw/quality-built combination.

Agreed, not much can touch it at any price, but at $190, it is in a league of it’s own. I actually like that it uses D cells. Having 36,000 - 40,000 mAh of battery on tap is a nice feeling. I hope they come out with an XM-L2 version of it before too long. I will definitely be selling mine and upgrading if they do.

Hi, my fist light purchase was a TK70 & a TK35, from reading this forum it seemed i would then have the Best large Light Capaple of flood and throw to the max and the TK35 as a smaller version of the same thing, capable of being carried in my Pocket. The idea was that if i got the best to start with, then i would save a fortune on working my way up there by buying other lights, not being happy with them and spending more and more Money before finally getting the TK’s. Sounded Great in my head in Theory, However, though i was awed with these Lights and there ability to turn Night into Day, now several months down the track and as a result of reading this forum Constantly. I now have a Collection of nearly 100 Lights some being, (TF X100, TF X6 SST90, TF 3T6, SR King, Thrunite TN30 & 31 etc, etc) as a result of the ensuing Addiction. I don’t regret a single purchase, but the only one that was able to out perform the TK70 was one of those 75watt HID’s (Which is neither LED or a fair fight, and it only wins in Perfomance not in Quality)
Regardless of the HID’s edge, i still consider the TK70 to be King, it is LED, lasts longer, is far better made, comes on instantly, has the Buttons in the Top instead of on the rear ( which on a large Light i find annoying as it means both hands to change modes or switch on), it can be used as a defensive weapon or dropped without costing you a fortune in Bulbs, the amount of Light that it produces is amazing, and i could continue all day to sing it’s praise’s. I know that if i had to get rid of all off my Lights and only keep one, the TK70 would be it. It is still the King, it is run on Tenergy Premium 10mah Batteries and works well on them (i have already tried the cheap 10mah Battery route and it chews them up and spits them out, wont even work in Turbo mode with them). I feel like a member of an Elite Group every time i take it out to use it, so i believe you have made a very wise choice (though it is a bit hard to EDC it). The one and only gripe i have about this Light is the “Flimsy carry strap you get with it, if it had one like the X6 with spare Battery Holder and pouch for a backup EDC, it would be ”Perfect”. I hope you enjoy your TK70 as i do. Good Choise. Chris

I agree Toph. I myself have those ebay 85w HID. I still enjoy my trustfires too, even though they are out-classed. Can’t wait for summer to get over to take them out again. The cold up here in Wisconsin really kills batteries even my li-ons feel the cold.

The Tk70 is a beast of a light no doubt. But very heavy at 3lbs loaded with 4 D batteries. But it’s not bad once you get use to carrying it. But I will say the Fenix TK75 has really put a damper on the TK70 sales. Even Fenix realizes this. The TK75 is just so much more practical with its smaller design and less weight and still offers tremendous throw that’s almost as good as the TK70. The TK70 does offer a lot more flood. But the true kicker to the TK75 is that it runs off of 18650 batteries which are lighter and in my opinion so much better technology and more practical than the heavy D NIMH batteries that will lose their charge unless you buy the better batteries. Been there and done that.

Hi Feilox, I live in Queensland, Australia so temperature is not an issue here, at the moment just Floods. But as i live in the City the Torches don’t get used very often sadly, but when they do the TK70 is always there as the Benchmark. I don’t no whether i’ll get the TK75 because i already have the new TN30 and X100 for better close in Flood, and i like the fact that the TK70 is not Lithium, as that means i don’t have to worry as much about Cells going Bang on me when in use. Yes it is Heavy, but that can also be an advantage when using defensively. Throw the Strap over your Shoulder and the weight is no longer an issue, and you can operate it with one Hand.

The TK75 is not an option for me due to the low temperatures during the wintertime. For example today we had - 26 C in the morning.
Lithium batteries stop delivering power at 0 degrees C internal temperature. The NiMHs produce less power at lower temperatues but they don´t die suddenly at 0.
Lithium is a problem also in cell-phones and digital cameras, sudden death at 0 degrees.
