I’d guess the resistors are in parallel, and the medium mode is done via PWM. While in Medium mode, wave something shiny like a screwdriver tip in front of the light. If the motion appears smooth, it’s not PWM. If you see 20 screwdriver tips all at the same time, it’s PWM.

Welcome the night.

Precisely, and I recommend not waving screwdrivers around while drinking screwdrivers. Someone could lose an eye… plus you’ll look really stupid in the flashlight aisle at HD. Big Smile

I’ve got two of a few things, and just fine and dandy with keeping them all in pairs Wink

Maybe based on somthing along the lines of the PAM2805? Similar layout, same modes. Vref would be 0.095V, however, which would put the LED current on high at only 125mA, so clearly it’s a different chip.

Has anyone done a simple ‘dedome only’ on these? How did you like it? The tint on one of mine is spotty…changes across the beam. I thought a dedome might even it out. Help me out fellow BLFers!

The phosphor is deposited on the dome—dedoming will even out tint variation in the beam if you need or want a blue light.

I just read here that it’s actually not a remote-phosphor in the sense that I thought. Shows how much I know!
So I’m not sure what this LED would do when dedomed. Only one way to find out Big Smile

Thanks Slim, I keep reading that a dedome will warm the tint some, is this emitter different?

EDIT: looked at the 60w and there are 20leds in it!

Is this the light your talking about? Did the light contain XB-D or XT-E’s? Wondering, because it may be a cheap way to put warmer emitters this light and in other in cheap lights.

This little rascal with its ‘lowly’ XTE emitter has to be the brightest 120 lumens I’ve ever come across especially on strobe. It really smarts the peepers. Maybe it’s the particular OP reflector and/or the nature of the XTE itself but whatever it is it’s surprisingly no slouch. I’m even tempted to dedome an XTE and see what’s what.

It has a TCR rating of ‘10’. $1.00 including batteries.

Yeah, it’s a surprisingly nice little light. I find the beam pattern much nicer without the centering ring. Smoother transition between the hot spot and spill.

Has anyone tried to take off the head? Does it come off? The tail end screws into a an Sipik 68. I am on the road and don’t have the tools to get the head off to try. I’m thinking it would be nice to have a SK68 running off 3 – NiMH.

O-L was the first to report that the bezel screws off, but not the head. Everything is accessible when you take off the bezel though. Very easy light to work on.

All a man needs is the right tools. The head does come off but it’s glued on. I used the brute force method but there is another, more clever way. I think I read here that some sort of soak will do it, or was it heat?

Anyway, the tube DOES fit the Sipik 68 here is a pic of the new, just released, Defiant HD-68 (HD=Home Depot)
Runs on 3 – AA

I was never really interested in these lights until I saw here that I can get the pair for less than $8 at Home Depot. I have to say that I am actually VERY impressed with them. Build quality is, well, less than top notch. But these are definitely top notch performers, even without considering the price.

The funny thing about Defiant is that, despite the fact that they are often cheaply made, I’ve NEVER had one that wasn’t a good performer. These lights are rated at 120 lumens. And they put out AT LEAST that. Not only is output good, but so is tint. No blue or green casts. Just a nice, creamy white. My Minimag LED (the standard 77 lumen model) may be better built. But it doesn’t put out near the light. Heatsinking is nonexistant. And the tint is VERY bluish. As far as performance, there’s NO COMPARISON with this Defiant.

As far as modding this light, I’ve certainly been thinking about it. After all, it didn’t cost much. And it seems like it could possibly do ALOT better with a better emitter (maybe an XP-G2 or XM-L2). Of course, I also like the light as it is, and don’t know if I really want to try my first mod on it. Oh wait! You actually get two of them. So I can have it both ways.

Without lamps, there’d be no light.

Don’t know if this is news or not, but, I just bought 1 2 pk on 6.20 and the price was $11.98 + tax = $12.95 I was then in the store last Friday, 6.28 and I now see the price is $7.98 + tax for this 2 pk. w00t! Bought another one lol. There was one left at the store I was at. H Depot clerk said I could bring receipt on 1st purchase and get refund of the difference. Also, thought I’d give a try posting a pic from photobucket. I wonder if the album has to be public or can it be private? Anyhow, just wanted to share Smile

The XTE now throws a good bit further subject to the fact that it has an OP reflector which tends to stifle that aspect.

Cool! I went to HD today, and they are still $11.98 here in Tulsa.

tallboybass: Maybe print out my pic above and get HD to pricematch themselves. I took my receipt down today and got $4.32 back  I’ve done 3 or 4 price matches with them at the service desk very recently and didn’t have any problems with getting them to price match what I wanted.

That’s right. I had a problem with HD recently concerning replacement windows. They wanted to charge for “Custom order” prices for window sizes that were for sale on their website.”………until I made them price match their own website!

I’ve done that with Guitar Center and Musician’s Friend…they’re basically the same corporation but GC didn’t want to match MF’s total out-the-door price!

I am in a HD almost every day. I will know within a day or 2 of them going on clearance and will post the pic.
BTW, the Bloomfield HD just sold their first 5C Defiant 2 days ago. I never bought one, but was gifted one by a friend that bought one and liked it so much he gave me one. Apart from needing 5 C cells to run, I like it. That one too will go on clearance.

I guess you’re going to use the inventory checker? #469 #473 off hand but there were also others that were out of town where I got them to also do a price match to Costco’s MagLite combo pack. I got 3 at 2 different stores  These lights though, do not show up on their website. Hope this helps.

I was wondering what the max voltage these lights could do in their stock form. I was thinking the light could do a 14500 with a dummy cell mebbe? Wonder if would be brighter? Then, possibly 2 14500? That would prolly poof the light tho lol So, what say you all?

Went to HD to buy some more before they take them off the shelf (heard the discontinued rumor) Seems to be true- none on shelves or displays and apparently they are totally off the computer inventory. That sucks, I was going to buy a couple more packs!
