i think i got a dud charger

i ordered a trustfire tr-006 from ebay (us based seller, 100% feedback, 10000+ transactions)

its behaving weirdly

first charge only charged batteries to 4.1 volts - they are new panasonic ncrb 3400 mah from fast tech and have no prob taking a full charge from my xtar wp6 ii

tried an mnke imr 26650 and it completely shut off at 4.05 v and was uncomfortably hot…. too hot to pick up… cell was warm but not hot to touch

i messaged the seller - i think i can return/exchange it… pity … $13 charger and its going to cost me $6 to send it all the way back to the west coast for a replacement….

am i correct in assuming that this thing is a dud and or not safe and i should either trash/replace it?

6 bucks to send it back is cheaper than rebuilding your home. Sounds like the imr was on its way to thermal runaway with flames.
.
Cells should not get that hot unless overcharged or they have a high internal resistance, warm maybe with older used cells but not to hot to hold. Your reported voltages wouldn’t be considered overcharged. So its possible the charger is doing something (bad connection or cheap components maybe) its not suppose to be doing. I wouldn’t sweat the 6 bucks for piece of mind.

i think the charger is junk, i say press for a refund, since it costs you $6 to return it and seller would have to pay another $6 to ship you another one (make sure you don’t get the same one back, look for a serial number or unique identifying feature)

It seems as if the charger got hot and heated the LMR cell due to proximity. Photograph a thermometer showing the hot charger. Demand a full refund, refuse to pay shipping, and do not use the charger.

i sent him a message on ebay

im not worried about getting my money back or a replacement - he has a very good feedback rating and i have paypal on my side as well if he doesnt respond for some reason.

i will have to pay return shipping most likely - it said up front in the auction that buyer pays return shipping

i dont mind paying a few bucks - even though it is another 45% of the cost of the charger… stuff happens.

Just wondering, why did you buy it in the first place?
