XM-L2 U2 4C color question

I don’t know where I should ask this but…

I just swapped my old stock XML T6 to this XML2 U2 4C

Is it supposed to be this pee yellow?
Am I a virgin to warm white LED?
No info on Cree spec sheet yet
I got it because someone said it’s the same tint as MTG2 leds ._.

I got my LED here

I’m not used to the yellow color but that’s what fasttech has to offer~ oh well
But it sure looks pretty good outdoors~ 0:)

Yup thats what a cheap WW or NW will look like. Its due to poor CRI. This is the exact reason why I stick to CW tints or nachia 219 CRI

HA! you said pee…

Based on your description and pictures, I do think you have the right tint. It should be yellow without much green or red. Many people, including myself, prefer this tint.

As far as being like the mt-g2; it may be similar color, but I have yet to see an LED with better tint than the mt-g2. IMHO it is even better than the nichia offerings.

Jup, that’s a 4C tint, i like it! I even prefer the 5A to 5B range, because there’s a lot more red in the spectrum.
…and yes, Nichia beats ’em all hands down!

when hitting white walls the 3c/4c look ugly, but hitting things with colors, they tend to look better than 1A/1C tints

Yes I’m afraid its about right. I have a convoy in 4C tint and it is yellow.
After experimenting with different tins, I’ve decided I like the “A” better than “C”. Far less yellow and more red. For example I really like 5A, 7A3 etc.

You can put a little cooling filter in front of the lens to do away with the yellow cast. It’s what I did with my 4C tint and I find it less objectionable.

As mentioned above, a lot depends on CRI. I have 2- 7D tint XM-L2 lights that are high CRI and like and some 1C and 3C lights that are greenish. If the output isn’t a very broad spectrum your eye won’t like it much no matter the tint since much of what you normally see won’t be as visible. Tint mixing on multi emitter lights is more and more popular since each led tends to fill in spectrum gaps left by the others but the result is always more floody than a single emitter. BTW, my favorite “white” is 3D but when better contrast is called for I like 1D.

I suppose one should ask, what colour were you expecting from a WW?

BTW - you may want to buy from here:

Nice choice, you get what you pay for and available on Noctigons.

The above term was coined by a BLF member a couple years back for the XM-L’s tendency to exhibit nasty tint differences between spot and spill. Other LEDs suffer from this but not as much.

It also depends on reflector geometry. I’ve noticed TIR optics can make a very uniform tint with the XM-L/XM-L2

I installed a real 3C today from Richard Compared it to a 3B from Fasttech —The 3B is quite a bit warmer closer to the 4C I have
Once you start using warm tints the cool ones stay on the shelf

Comparing to an "MTG" just doesn't make sense. MTG is just like saying they are like xpg...

because MTG xml xpg etc have different tints!

4C is a big old box and tints can be from greeen to yellow and even a bit rosey .

I have a 4c xpg-2 that is as good or better tint than the nichia 219A.

The real question is side by side against another light how does it render colors ?

i have a small do it yourself set of books that all have different colors and another sheet of multiple colors right next to it that I can check all the common colors against .lastly I go check two or three lights at nigfht in the garden and look at flowers . All my cool white lights are found in the morning with dew on them because I've chucked them in the bushes and swear i'm never going to use such crap ever again .

i like 4c tints ... just not all of them

* 3c 3b 4c nichia 219A 5c 5a etc are all neutrals not warm whites

I really liked that first golden yellow 4C tint I got, but then I found 7C, 6B, 8A2, and more warm tints and now I’m not using my 4C hardly. After a 3C with a green hue, I don’t even want anything cooler than 4C. However, I’ve noticed large variation within each tint group, one 8A2 distinctly more red and orange and the other 8A2 I have which is more yellow with some orange. And even in comparing tints in different groups, one which seems like it should be much more orange/red in the chart tint group, and further down the line to the right, actually being more yellowy than another tint closer to the more yellow tints and several groups further left… Seems like the tints are very loosely grouped.

4C has a slight yellow, throw a WW at 3000K in it and then talk about pee yellow

4C (4300-5000) is almost “sunlight” tint approx at 5500K

I like this color as it makes other colors more vibrant…but yes on pure white it has a “slight yellow” tinge to it

All subjective…my favorite tint but others don’t like it

Wow

so many answers to my question :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Before I continue I gotta say thanks to all the answers
It cleared my mind and doubts

as a reply to Chicken Drumstick~
I guess what I’m expecting from a cool white would be something like car xenon blue bulbs? Like the “Osram Night Breaker Car Bulbs”?
Maybe I’m just comparing apples and oranges :stuck_out_tongue:
Thanks for the link to where I can get LEDs though  Really appreciate it! I’ll make my future purchases there

I was running it just barely 1A with a nanjg 16 mode driver. Gotta set my priorities for runtime over brightness. (will test some 2.8A drivers when I feel like it)
I believe running higher amps cools the color tint? Or just making it brighter? :quest:

the XM-L2 4C tint is on the Yellow-side of the neutral white tints, or on the “cool side” of the Warm white tints. Sort of in between. I found that a 4C in a 30 degree TIR optic looked cooler than they do in a traditional reflector, which i found give off that yellow tint hue.
The XM-L2 3B tint is much more Neutral, with less yellow, and probably the closest i seen so far to a MT-G2 tint. I like the 3B tints the best for neutral-white XM-L series emitters.

Xenon HIDS will offer up different light, it’s not just about tint, but CRI and K.

That said, proper OEM HIDS are normally 4300k and neutral white. The only blue is from the optic when you are looking at them from a high angle, the light is not blue.

Many aftermarket HIDS are 6000k or higher and these look blue and have poor colour rendition.

Not all 4C tints are ‘exactly’ the same. All of mine from one batch are vanillaish-greenish yellow and show up as BLUE with the incandescent setting on the phone. Recently got a single 4C from FT which I transferred to a Cu star and the tint is so much more beautiful compared to the previous set. It’s more of a rose tinted NW and comparing side by side, the other 4Cs look green. On incandescent setting, the second 4C is less blue than the first. I feel so sad now since two of these LEDs were ‘lost’ during shipment.
