recommend me a light

I’m looking for a single 26650, single emitter thrower. I’m really thinking about a shadow jm26 because it looks good but I get the impression a yezl y3 can perform better. Though I did see chibim is having trouble reaching expected lux for the mods he’s done. I’ve had a look around but I haven’t been able to find lux numbers for a modded jm26.

Is the jm26 and yezl y3 comparable? Are there any other single 26650 lights I should be thinking about?

Cool. I’ve read good things about the dst but don’t really know much about it. Does the driver need replacing?

The DST thrower has not been around for along time now. Unless you can get a second hand one, more than likely from the US your probably out of luck.

What about the Maxtoch M12. I dont have one but it does get good reviews. Heres one from Tom E.

I was going to say straight out that I was looking for side switch but that thing performs well out of the box. I’ll look more into it. Thanks MRsDNF

I think I’ve been spoilt. I got the maxtoch m12 and wasn’t overly impressed with it stock but after modding it some it seems quite good for it’s size. The driver was a different layout to the one Tom.E had reviewed. I was only getting a bit over 2.5a at the tail. After trying to mod the driver (without much success) I decided to do away with it, no matter what I did I couldn’t seem to get more than 3a current (tail) with the driver. Even after direct driving the led the current isn’t that high, with one of my best batteries (sony 26650 50amp) I was still only getting 4.5amps. I’ll just chalk it up to high vf I guess???

Another reason I was kinda let down is the reflector. The reflector in this light shown below seemed to have better throw.

I was comparing the M12 to this light with a dedomed sst-90. The dedomed sst-90 is larger than the domed xml but the hotspots from the 2 lights were kinda comparable. Only the sst-90 (a larger led) in a smaller reflector seemed to have a slightly tighter spot than the xml in a larger reflector????!!! I tried the smaller reflector in the maxtoch (yes it actually fit neatly inside the M12 head) and it did improve throw compared to the stock reflector. I have since dedomed the led but have not tried the smaller reflector again. Performance with the stock reflector dedomed and at 4.5amps puts in a league comparable to a stock tk61. If the M12 had a side switch I would be very happy with it. I’m even contemplating drilling a hole in the side myself, we’ll see.

Yes you have been spoilt. DBC is another. Time for a new hobby for your thrills. May I suggest riding your bike down some of those huge sand dunes you have over there or maybe ride through the army area where they do there practising. Another story but while four wheel driving north of Perth years ago we were wondering why there was shells flying through the air when we got bailed up by an army guy about what the LOTS OF SWEAR WORDS were doing in here. I'm still here so we got out without getting blown up.
