Review: Klarus P1C, a handy EDC flashlight

I got this nice looking flashlight from LightCastle and it took 3-4 weeks for shipping.

Flashlight Specification:

  • LED: CREE XP-G R5
  • Battery: 1x CR123A
  • Switch: Forward clicky for On/Off, twist for changing mode
  • Mode: Two, 20 lumens on low and 245 on high
  • Dimension: 89mm (Length), 23mm (Head), 22.6mm (Body)
  • Weight: 54g (without battery)
  • Reflector: Orange peel to provide a smooth, flawless beam.
  • Lens: Toughened, ultra clear glass

First Impression:
After receiving this flashlight, I just realized that it requires primary CR123 (3 Volt). But as other “modern flashlights” do, I found that it also accepts RCR123/16340 (3.7 V). Of course it get hot quicker when using RCR123.

Klarus P1C using orange peel reflector, resulting a smooth and flawless beam. Suitable for close distance and still deliver enough light for medium distance. I have took photos of beamshots at 15 meters distance and will post it below.

Dimension:
Klarus P1C dimension is pretty compact and suitable for EDC.
A little too long for pocket carry, I wish they also provide holster on the package.

Here’s size comparison to Quark Mini 123 and Novatac 120T:

The light consisted of three parts (head, body, switch), here are they, tored down:

It has nice spring on the switch and reverse polarity protection on the head. No spring on the head:

As an EDC flashlight it has perfect size to hold by hand. Here’s my various ways of holding the light at any occasion.

Even using syringue technique:

Pros:

  • Small and bright
  • Handy for EDC, perfect for close or medium distance (even little further up to 25 meters away)
  • Decent body quality, spring contact etc.
  • Forward clicky for instant activation
  • Simple UI. Tighten head for high, loosen for low.

Cons:

  • Low mode is too bright. The specification said that low mode is 20 lumens, but I think it’s over 150 lumens. See pic on second post.

Overall Impression:
Klarus P1C is great EDC light if you don’t mind with the high brightness on low mode. As I myself enjoy a light with moonlight mode (or at least, 10 lumen on low) so I don’t feel very comfortable carrying this light for my main flashlight.

Indoor/Wall Beamshots
Distance from flashlight and camera to the wall was about 2 meters.
Manual exposure, 1/3 sec, f/8.0, ISO 125.

Outdoor Beamshots
Distance from flashlight and camera to the banana tree was about 15 meters.
Manual exposure, 1 sec, f/2, ISO 125.

I’ve been a big fan of Klarus for a couple of years. I love my P1As and P2A. I showed my boss the P1A and he bough four of them. He recently asked me to find him a good deal on some more. I told him that there were probably better 1AA lights out there now. Better emitter, longer run time, cheaper etc. he said he didn’t care, he wanted more of those same lights.

I don’t know if they updated the P1A but I’m talking about the older XP-G slightly greenish led. Not a fan of the tint or how floody it is but the light itself is great quality and I love the forward clicky and simple two mode operations.

This Klarus looks great. I have been wanting a cr123 flashlight. I have somehow managed to never have owned one! I’ve got a Zebralight cr123 headlamp but never a handheld flashlight.

My first Klarus was the XT11. The first light that I bought for its looks alone. Then the P1a, lately the FL18 and the latest RS16 , which are still in its box, no time to play with it yet.

The Klarus brand is one of the most underated lights among the big boys. Own one and you’ll be amazed by its workmanship.

!!

I have a P2A and have to agree that the build quality is superb. NW tint and a useful mix of throw to flood. Simple UI that anyone can immediately use. A well thought out product.

I agree with you. I was surprised to see its build quality and wondering why not so many people keen on Klarus.

Anyone tried to compare with Jetbeam BC10? I think they’re almost twin in appearance.

I’ve owned several of both. The quality is the same and I’m pretty sure they must be the same or related company. The Klarus P1A is slightly better than the Jetbeam BA10 because the clip is in a better position and machining is a little different. Basically the same light though.

I have made my first video review here:

Badly need to practice speaking in front of camera
