review: Olight S1 Baton (pics!)

Hello my friends!

Last week i received a little black bag (i thought s Lithium cells arrived...)

but within was: the new Olight S1

inside i found:

the flashlight and a lanyard

(a good one actually with a little needle thingie attached to make it easy to mount it on the light)

also a user manual in a lot of languages - but with every information needed:

let it dance!

just to imagine how small that light is i put it inbetween a mighty 18650 cell, the Olight S10R (my actual old EDC), a AA-size Eneloop and the 16340 cell i used for testing

some detail shots...

the retaining ring has a metalic blue anodisation, as has the ring around the sideswitch

the sideswitch is just a little elevated - but you can find the rubber sideswitch quite easy
(the rubber switch is a step back imho from the design of SxxR series)

the built quality is very high, knurling and laser etching are very good

the threads on the battery tube are lubed and square cut

a loot inside the tube does not show much...

in the tailcap is a strong! magnetwhich can also be detached.

i said strong....

the bright side has no classical reflector, but a TIR lens

there is no front lens - the plastic TIR is directly exposed to whatever you have in your pocket...

one can see the wires behind and also solder spots ;)

the LED is perfectly centered in this view

that is actual a bond wire at 11 o´clock!

before assembling

negative comes first! (reverse polarity protection works fine - ask why i know...)

the nice pocket clip can be mounted both ways

i like to carry my EDC safe from keys and other things in my clock-pocket!

but reversing the clip makes a great headlight..

... and thats why headlights are not liked by co-workers

i also made some beamshots on my home cinema canvas

ISO 800, 1/3 sec

outside the light can show its perfect hot"spot" and nice tint (on the cold side)*

to show the UI and a slightly disturbing thing i made a short video:

i also took measures in my lightbox and the amperes drawn:

level Ampere Lumen
standby 6,2 µA -
Moon 0,012 nA
Low 0,027 6
Medium 0,141 74
High 1,5 480

what i miss:

  • the button from the SxxR
  • warmer tint
  • 3A TURBO!

conclusion:

due to the tinyness and the big amount of useful light its my new EDC

PS: a great discount is available at banggood - please contact me for details

(THX 4 the sample!)

Nice review as always. I liked the rotating shot with the hard drive platter.

Nice review Martin.
And thanks for the Banggood discount

 Good review. I am now trying to decide between the usb rechargeable and this one.

Nice review Martin. Is it a little too heavy to put on top of your cap? It looks like it is in the way hanging underneath, or is that not the case.

Thanks!

my wife (she is a n3rd) could not identify the “shinie thingie“

for a short time the light is not too heavy , but for working i prefer a real headband because its less “wobbely“

Martin, thanks for producing and posting the review. The video was a nice one to describe the UI. Thanks

Some great photos there and review of this new S1. Is that you in the photos above?
I been contemplating ordering one of these for a new EDC.

yes - thats me!

i hope i did not frighten the kids

Nice review.

Thanks for the Banggood discount!

Good review, Thanks. Just got mine.

  1. What’s the little round magnet in the box for? Seems the S1
    already is magnetic.

Right now enjoying mine with the clip taken off…just pitch it in my pocket and no snag.

I believe its a spare.
