reference needed re deep cycling 18650s and leaving battery in charger

I'm trying to persuade someone who is stubborn and self opinionated that

a. using a battery until the battery protection circuit makes the light start to flash isn't the best way to get maximum life out out of an 18650.

b. leaving a battery in the switched on charger isn't the best way to ensure maximum charge when you need it.

I've done some searching on the internet but can't find any clear idiot proof articles on these points.

Maybe just refer him to HKJ's website?

Yeah, depends on which charger. See what HKJ has said about it if he’s reviewed it.

And ask the guy if he knows when not to inhale.

Nothing is idiot proof, because idiots are so persistent.
