Yep, and so is your plane.

I’m glad you said that, because it validates my point.

Now depending on where that plane is, it cannot always be flying over the leading part of the earth. I.E. the side of earth facing the direction of the planets travel through space.
If I jump out of that plane on the opposite side – the trailing side of the planet, according to some, the PLANE should ‘catch up’ to me, not the earth.
I hope that makes sense.

Nope, people get the notion that objects in motion need an engine to prevent them from stopping. When in fact “an object in motion stays in motion”. So when you separate yourself from the plane, you keep all your motion. Plus the soon to come acceleration toward earth.

I admit that feels better, but it’s just a 3D version of the original. I prefer to think of gravity as a second form of magnetism. That seems like a far better explanation.

Exactly my point – you said it yourself ; “Plus the soon to come acceleration toward earth”

I’ve been refuting all along the notion that the earth catches up to an object. The plane, the earth and the jumper are all of course moving through space, but according to some, if I jump from any height, I “wait” for the earth to hit me.
That is simply bollocks. It doesn’t hit me at 66,000mph. I hit it at my terminal velocity.

Yea you and earth are like two magnets coming together. Except you are so tiny your effect on earth isn’t even worth mentioning. You accelerate toward earth. However you don’t feel the acceleration, you feel weightless. Which is counter-intuitive because of the wording. Let’s change the wording. Let’s call our weight our ‘smash’ because we are being smashed against earth daily. Now when we fall, we can say we feel smash-less. At least during free-fall Smile

Very much so. One could argue acceleration is only relative. Which I guess it is. You only accelerate if something else is going slower than you. A number of posts ago someone mentioned being able to feel acceleration in a vehicle, but not in a free fall.
I would say that’s only because until both you and the accelerating object match velocity, you are feeling the differential in acceleration between you and the vehicle.

That’s what a skydiver feels, the differential between the air velocity and his / hers. Other wise known as friction.

We don’t feel velocity, speed.
We do feel acceleration, changes in speed. And it feels the same as gravity.

I would agree that we can feel changes in speed, which is acceleration.

Are you sure you can feel the acceleration of gravity? If you jump out of an airplane, you’re “accelerating” towards the ground. But if you close your eyes and if you ignore air resistance, can you feel yourself accelerating towards the ground?

I would say no. You’re velocity continually increases the moment you jump out of the plane, yet you feel weightless the entire time. How is that possible?

Yea, I’m pretty sure we can feel acceleration. My buddy Albert even thinks so.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I might have some difficulty tuning out everything, adrenaline, air rushing around me, while hurtling toward earth.

It seems that acceleration peaks at 7m/s2 and you hit terminal velocity within the first 10sec. https://youtu.be/7qgD-MgeGDs?t=2m3s Maybe it’s just not enough to feel and/or too brief while distracted by air rushing around you and everything else.

Maybe there are little green men on Mars, but they don't want to be discovered ? One accident, yes, two suspicious. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-30784886 If there is a third, well, I have my suspicions ... PS:, not sure I believe the findings in that report, sounds like a cover-up to me, they just don't want the public frightened by the shocking truth.

The Beagle landed safely and it is doing it's job as intended. The whole idea of the crash landing was part of the project. The British, as they have done in the past on Earth, are trying to take over Mars as one of their colonies, before any other nation can claim it. The Beagle is simply a radio transmitter being used to brainwash the Martians by playing nothing but Beatles music over and over, with subliminal messages that all Martians are and always have been British citizens and now is the time for them to remember the British heritage they lost when they first crash landed on Mars.  The Beagle got it's name for the mission, from a parody of the Beatles Abby Road album, where four Beagles are walking the crosswalk instead of the Beatles. It was thought that no one would ever catch the subtlety, but it wasn't lost on all of us who monitor the subversive British activity on Earth, and now, unfortunately in space.

British Guys N Gals, please don't take slight at my comments. I am just joking. It's just in fun and in keeping with the craziness of this thread. Some of us are not really watching you all the time.

I don’t mind when Gravity waves.

It’s when she gives that little head shake & sly wink as she walks off into the mass crowds that draws me in…

I suspect many members treat it as a parody belief, just like followers of the flying spaghetti monster

This field of study will just keep winning, and we knew that all the best people would want to be on board. On the surface you feel gravity all the time, whether through the soles of your feet walking or the dent your head makes in the pillow, but only because there is a force resisting the pull such as the force that binds the matter together under your feet or the pillow under your head. As a free floating object there is no other detectable force. It would seem like the planet started accelerating at you with malevolent intent. Once you enter the atmosphere you feel the force of the air moving past but the pull on you is so uniform you can’t distinguish it. Larry Niven wrote a short story called Neutron Star as part of a collection by the same name that attempted to describe what would happen to someone trying to pass close by a deep gravity well. It helped explain to me why the tide is present on both sides of the planet rather than only the side facing the moon. The grisly nature of the story didn’t hurt in making the point.

Actually the barrel acts as a shelf until the bullet clears the end. And they both fall downward at the same rate, regardless of forward speed.

Context foul, at least quote the entire sentence so that the joke is revealed. Not a true quote otherwise. Besides, what if the bullet unfolds wings? Wink

Wow there’s been 30 posts since I went to bed last night. Yes you only feel acceleration, not speed. But as you sit in your house you are accelerating against the space-time that warps toward earth’s mass. You live your life accelerating against it. If you jump out of a plane you are suddenly free of the sensation of acceleration. This is hard stuff to explain because most people thing of the chair in their house as cosmic zero.

Cosmic Zero? Sounds like a good name for a band Big Smile They could have a LED Light Show instead of lasers and sell lots of 33RPM vinyl spheres for the audiophiles to listen to.

I think my mental warpage is accelerating with my advancing time here, or I might have a case of “cosmicosis”, a rare uninhibiting disease which mostly affects the humerus. Carry on- I usually do!
