Olight website history

One might expect that with a popular brand name, all you have to do is put “.com” on the end of it and you’ll find the corporate website. It appears that the domain “olight.com” was originally created in 2003 and then secured by the DuPont company over 10 years ago. Olight appeared as a Chinese company in 2006. It looks like at this point, Olight couldn’t wrestle “olight.com” from the massive international DuPont company (owned and backed by some of the wealthiest families on the planet), so in 2007 they secured “olightworld.com”. You can have a website without a trademark… but perhaps DuPont registered the “olight” name within the USA. Or they simply refuse to give up the site name. That site was “dead” for quite a few years, but now leads to a page on a DuPont site about OLED technology created by DuPont.

The “Olight World” website behaves like a combined corporate website and retail site — you can buy products there. But then, what of other Olight sites? There are several, defined by country.

There is an “olightusa.com” website that I’d known of for quite a while back. In 2013 I had bought a few accessories on that site. But now it shows “temporarily down for maintenance”… and it has been like that for a couple of years based on the information shown on the Internet archive site. Looks like the last time it worked was in January 2014, having gone through several design iterations. After that, it has been showing the “down for maintenance” message. Very strange.

There’s also “olightfrance.com”, which provides some basic company and product information in French.

There’s an “olightworld.co.uk”, which has always been down for maintenance and redirects to Torch Direct.

I haven’t seen any others (like olightspain, olightitaly, olightgermany, etc). There is an “olightindia.com” reserved, but no site yet.

Lastly, we’ve also been made aware of Olight Direct, which has a retail store on Amazon and is active in promoting the brand. I wonder if it is connected to the Olight manufacturing company or operating independently (perhaps some kind of affiliate).

Anyone know any further details? Thanks!
