Wasn’t sure whether to put this as new post or not, but here goes. I just got a Skyray King clone, and looks pretty nice but not nearly as bright as I would expect. Attached are pics of inside and out and I would appreciate anyone’s suggestions as to some basic mods I could make to enhance brightness.
When I reflowed NW XML2 on the ALU ledboard and used thick let wires and put thermal paste on the ridge the ledboard is resting on a srk clone got a nice tint.
I used a RMM SRK 32*7138 V2 driver with moon (BLF groupbuy about $17 if I divide the shipping over all that was in the order)
Works great.
Wanna test one with the default driver while waiting on the Q8 driver
Idk when I have time to do it though but good LEDs thick wires and better heat transfer should up the brightness
Well I would start with reflowing real LEDs, XML2 fut the board and I used the stove and it was pretty easy
See if you can improve cooling with thermal paste anf check if you ate happy.
Driver can always be done.
3x XML2 should cost no more then $3 each (I ordered 10 NW for about $27)
I just had the driver so when it was open and needed soldering I did that, if I would not have one I would have tied with the stock first
A cheap, easy way to simply bump amps is add a wire jumper over the squiggle trace pattern on the driver. I did that on my recently bought SRK clone. The squiggle pattern is only there to add resistance and reduce amps, and keep the heat down.
On the bottom end of the wire, I used an exacto type knife and scraped off the black layer to expose the copper trace. I did a few other things, like reflow true CREE emitters to replace the stock LatticeBright fake ones, added some thermal grease to where the aluminum plate the LEDs are on touches the outside shell of the light.
Just 3 more questions for now about modding the fake skyray.
1) What gauge of wire should I use to upgrade the wiring?
2) I have a 3 led skyray, are there any tricks to spread the light concentration a little bit further?
3) Is there any way to tell if I have real crees or not? I got some Panasonic 18650 3400mah protected batteries from gearbest and it’s much brighter than it was before, but still trying to up it.
Look at either the Cree web site or the sticky reference: LEDS and other stuff. Take a good clear picture of yours and blow it up for detail then compare the two.
